"Mac OS error code -54"

What is this error? Is it network-related?

Seems it's permission related.

Error Codes 0 to -261

thanks, schwartze

sort of makes sense, because error when BBEdit tried to open file on remote volume...

but, weird, because other apps (TextEdit) have no problem...

what could be the problem here?

Could it be the permissions on BBEdit itself? Try making them the same as TextEdit and see what happens.

Made the changes, problem remains the same.

And if the file is local I bet it works just fine with BBedit?

I don't think I can be much help past finding the error codes (go me!) but I have sporadically had problems with BBedit Lite on a networked drive. I never checked the error code though.

My thoughts kinda go along with yellow 'cause when I am logged onto the network it is as a different user than the user on my computer where BBedit resides.

How to fix it, I don't know. It didn't happen enough for me to really investigate it.

OK, I think I might have it figured out...

Somewhere along the way (Mac OS X 10.2.6? BBEdit 7.0.2?) things got more strict about opening files that was already in use.

For some reason, the file cannot be opened because it is in use by another application, and thus cannot be used remotely, even read-only.

This was never a problem before. Even though another application was using the file, other applications could use it.

Finder- can copy locally while in use, but not remotely. SUCKS!

BBEdit- can open locally while in use, but not remotely. SUCKS!

TextEdit- can open locally while in use, can also open remotely. COOL!

Apple and BBEdit might think this is more secure, but I think it is a bug. At least, it is different behavior than previous versions.

Risking dealing with your wrath here Peaved! that just doesn't add up.

I say that because if I have had the same problems using BBedit Lite and my machine at work is running 10.2.5 the 10.2.6 idea and the BBedit 7.0.2 don't mesh.

Now, I can see how it might be a problem if you have the file open in another program and BBedit is refusing to open it while open, 'cause 95% of the time I have Dreamweaver open, I have BBedit open too.

I might even guess that the times I tried to open (and failed) with BBedit, Dreamweaver was there in the background with an open/edited, but not saved same file. Sounds like a good reason for BBedit not to open the file to me.

Call it a security bug, or call it common sense that two programs can not open the same file at the same time for editing. I am leaning towards the second one.

schwartze,

Maybe your problem is different?

Also, I may have been mistaken about OS X, the -54 problem may have been introduced with 10.2.5 instead of 10.2.6. Perhaps I didn't notice it earlier because wasn't using this file.

In my case, it's a bug. When an application opens a file, it determines whether or not other applications can open the file (or not) or write to the file.

In the past, it was always OK to open the file and even write to it, remotely or locally. (That's with the particular application in my case- in your case, Dreamweaver might be different, and your BBEdit Lite/Dreamweaver explanation makes sense and may not indicate a bug in your case.)

Notice, that even now BBEdit allows open and writing to the file locally. It should not be different when using the file remotely, but it is.

That's why I think it's a bug (in my situation).
