Problem with Preference Panes

Hi there.

I recently performed a clean install upon my system - preserving my Users folder, etc. as well.

But when I opened System Preferences, Preference Panes from my old installation remained, even though there was no evidence of those Preference Panes in all PreferencePanes folders (/System/Library/PreferencePanes, /Library/PreferencePanes/, ~/Library/PreferencePanes). When I click on a pane in System Preferences, it simply says that the pane cannot be opened.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Try deleting this file if it exists:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.PreferencePanes.plist

A better option

Delete:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache

... as this will cause System Preferences to rebuild its list of available preference panes but wont change any of your preferences. Given your problem it's much more likely that this file has become corrupt rather than the preference file.

[edit following morning coffee] It isn't that ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache becomes corrupt, rather that System Preferences fails to update it, hence its contents reflect a set of preference panes that are no longer installed. [/edit following morning coffee]

Whoops!

That's what I get for browsing the forums before I fall asleep.

Yay for drowsiness.

At least it wouldn't have done any harm
