Menu closing after a "mis-click"

Ok, so open up any menu, and click on a separator bar. The menu closes. Is there ANY way to get this to not happen?

A 'separator' bar is not an active element in the menu, and is only there for appearance.

If you click on the menu, it opens.
If you click again, the menu closes - regardless of where the cursor happens to be, even across the screen.

That's how it works.

If you don't want the menu to close, don't click again.

I just want the menu to not close, like on Windows (XP, at least, haven't used the new OSs yet). I get sloppy a lot, and will often miss the menu item I want and land on a separator or a disabled menu item, which closes the menu. Then I have to go to the top of the screen again, rather than just move slightly and click again.

I know it's the quintessence of lazy, but it's just something I was used to on Windows XP that's throwing me off here.

OK, that's one of the differences between Windows, and the Mac OS X - among many differences.
I'm not aware of any way to alter how the menus respond to mouse clicks.

You will notice that the menu drops away, regardless of where you happen to click. The menu does highlight items that you are mousing across, and will not highlight unless the item is active.
Should I be blunt, and say "take your time, and watch for your menu selection to highlight. If it doesn't highlight, you're being sloppy again!"?
Nah, I won't say that...

The many threads that compare Window to Mac OS X will usually end up by deciding that the two are quite different, and you get to allow for those differences. You also get to decide if you can live with the differences, eh?

Since that's the second time you said that, i just want to point out that
if we click once on the name of a submenu, the menu doesn't disappear.

For example: Safari -> Services (click on the word "Services")

It takes 2 · separate · clicks before the menu falls away.

I'm almost certain that -- if the programmers wanted to -- they
could make divider lines do the same... or even have the menu
remain open, until the mouse leaves that area.

But they didn't, so... we end up in the same place.

I think this is interesting, and would make an excellent bug report. I'm not sure if it's better or worse, but there's certainly a discussion to be had.

e: Ah, clicking any disabled menu item will dismiss the menu. I can see how this can be frustrating, especially for those with portables and tap-to-click enabled.
