80GB HD listed as 8GB after reformat!!!!

I have an external firewire box with an ATA-80GB HD (rather old) in it. After a reformat, it went from being an 80GB to an 8 GB HD. Needless to say, I'd like that extra space back. I tried reformatting and zeroing the data, but it still listed as only 8 GB.

Any help?

Where do you see it being shown as 8 GB? (I.e., what application(s) is reporting that, and where in that app.) What application did you use to reformat the drive?

In addition to all of the excellent questions above, also please tell us if this 80 GB hard drive has ever been formatted while it was inside this external case before?

And please tell us the brand and model of the drive inside the external case? And tell us how it is jumpered.

Since the OP did a reformat with Disk Utility (fairly safe to assume) the 8 Gb info probably came from there. Next questions: was the external drive ever a boot/system one; and was the reformatting Archive & Install or Erase and Install?

I don't remember the brand name of the drive (it was too long ago that I bought it). The reformat was done with Disk Utility on the Panther install disk (My Tiger disk was too scratched). Now I have 10.4.11 installed.

I tried Diskwarrior and the command line diskutil programs, but they all say it is an 8 GB disk.

Yes, it was a system disk in the distant past. However, it was not used as a system disk when I reformatted it now. I used Disk Utility to reformat, then I installed Panther.
