Delaying the Dock

I've come to accept the Dock but I have issues with it instantly popping up when my cursor touches the edge of the screen. Is there a way to adjust the delay of the Dock popping open?

I doubt it. There was no solution for users who wanted a shorter delay:

One user's "instant" is another's eternity.

Work-arounds:
Leave your Dock showing
Make your Dock as small as possible, and pin in a corner, rather than in the middle, and on a side where you don't often mouse.
Probably others I don't think of right now....

A few more options. Put the dock at the too of your screen via the terminal. Ditch the dock alltogether and give some dock alternatives a shot.

In Leopard, it's not possible to put the Dock to the top of the screen beneath the menu bar (I wish I could). In Tiger it can be done with this Terminal command:

defaults write com.apple.dock orientation -string top

The Dock then needs to be restarted for the change to take effect: killall Dock

Don't kill the Dock unless it's misbehaving. Just log out.

DockBlock

Thanks for the tips. I'm constantly moving the Dock around and resizing it. It just gets in the way ALL THE TIME. I think I'm going to have to resort to using DockBlock and kill the thing completely. Which is a pity because the Dock can be useful at times.

The Dock *can* be annoying ... I use it to store Apps that I need reminding on to test out ... then if I don't like 'em I 'smoke' 'em .... other than that I don't keep much on it ... I use Spotlight to launch stuff ....

This is an app going up in smoke 'cos I didn't like it much ...
