Dialog From Hell: Your network settings have been changed by another app

I open the Network PrefsPane and a warning dialog pops up in front of it, "Your network settings have been changed by another application". (The "other application" is probably Internet Connect, but I don't know that for sure).

I click OK. Immediately a warning dialog pops up to inform me that "Your network settings have been changed by another application".

I click OK. Immediately a warning dialog pops up to inform me that "Your network settings have been changed by another application".

I click OK. Immediately a warning dialog pops up to inform me that "Your network settings have been changed by another application"....

OK OK OK Yeesh, go AWAY already! (I ⌘-Q System Preferences between OKs, it's the only way out).

I suppose I must trash a plist somewhere in ~/Library/Prefs?

See this, and the links therefrom for fixits http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-sy...y-network.html
I hope you have better luck with deleting .plists than I did. I ended up locking my SysPrefs.

Also, don't miss trying the DNSChanger removal tool. I have seen a number of Macs in the last few weeks that have acquired that trojan. One of it's tricks - unlocking the Network pref pane. Also, extremely slow web browsing, and inability to send or receive mail. The removal tool handles it, and system returns to normal immediately.

Now here's another vaguely interesting situation that *may* be related to this cursed issue of the Network Settings in Tiger. I posted the question about repetitive warnings about a week ago, which, coincidentally, is about the last occasion I listened to streaming radio.

Then today (Sun) I tried to tune in again. No, it wouldn't connect. I got the advice that "an error occurred while contacting the radio tuning service .........." There was nothing wrong with my internet connection. I posted the issue on Google which gave this useful link http://discussions.apple.com/thread....13317&tstart=0

Well, what do you know, something (not me) had checked the HTTP Proxy, which blocked iTunes radio. I thought it might have messed up the Network settings generally, so tried unlocking the Prefs, only to have that (expletive expunged) warning come back again.

I made my dialog from hell go away by going to the Security PrefsPane and telling it to require an admin pw before unlocking any secure system preference. It would never in a million years have occurred to me that that had anything whatsoever to do with "your network settings have been changed by some other app", but it works.

I solved the problem by changing (then saving) and then un-changing (and saving again) my timeserver settings. Adding the password requirement is sure a good idea from a security standpoint, but doesn't actually "solve the problem" from what I can see.

Did you get any result when you tried the DNSChanger removal tool?
I've seen this too often in other Macs in the last few weeks, and the tool has fixed similar problems by removing that DNSChanger trojan.

Sounds like two unrelated issues. Mine was with the Security Update and while I can't swear that everyone who gets messed up by that gets their problem solved by adding the pw requirement to any change of secure system prefs, it certainly worked for me. For the heck of it I downloaded DNS Changer Removal Tool but it confirmed I didn't have it on my system.

Good News - I think. The latest Tiger update appears to have fixed the Network Settings dialog bug. Here's hoping.

Later: No - it's back again. Things were okay for an hour or two, no recurrent warning, then I thought I'd check. Aaaaaaagh! How does one get through to the corporate Apple ostrich with its head stuck firmly up ... oops, I mean in the sand (to be euphemistic)?

A great piece of advice! Thank you. This solved the problem in 3 secs. Highly recommended. This problem from hell REALLY irritated me for a while.

Will still scan for the said trojan.

I too have been driven to frustration with this dialog from the abyss but following the recommendation in the above quote rectified it immediately. Thank you for saving what little sanity I have left!

I just noticed this problem on my system, and because I couldn't remember the last time I scanned for viruses I figured I'd give it a try. ClamXav found one phishing email in an account I haven't used in years, but nothing else. I doubt this is due to malware.

This worked for me, too - not sure why, but I'm happy! Thanks so much.

if anyone has any idea what could have caused this problem originally, please do share...

I developed this problem this morning, found your suggestion, and it worked. This got rid of the stupid message. Thanks.

Yep, exactly the same for me! Thanks very much for this advice – the dialogue from hell had been plaguing me for what seems like an eternity!

Sorry, missed that post when you made it.

Yes, I've got a Classic Platinum 'skin' courtesy of ShapeShifter. I've had actual Apple employees 90% convinced I was booting my dual-layer 1680 x 1050 G4 PowerBook in OS 9. (No Dock, modified bootX image, X-Assist, etc)

So I just got this bug on my PPC iBook (10.4.11) and checked "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" as advised to get by the dreaded DFH. Now if that is the answer has anyone worked out what the question was? Is this an ongoing problem waiting on a patch?
