Question Forgot Administrator Name...help? :)

Hello
I am a complete computer idiot. I got this mac not too long ago...but I went away and completely forgot the administrators name- and do not know how to look it up. I do however, have the administrators password memorized (i don't know if that helps at all). I really need help! I know that there is one user on the computer (thats me)- but it is not listed as the administrator. You need the admins name to do almost anything...and I really need help finding it...can you help me?

a million thanks

Open System Preferences, go to the Accounts pane, and look at the list of users on the left side. Admin accounts will be marked "Admin" under the name.

If instead, you need the short name, open Terminal and paste in this line:
Code:
dscacheutil -q group -a name admin
The line starting "users:" lists all the admin accounts on the machine. (It includes "root" but you can ignore that.)

The easiest method is by putting in the original operating system install DVD. Restart and boot from the DVD as if you were going to install the OS, then after you go through the first page of blurb you'll see a Utilities menu at the top of the screen. From there you can reset the password for any user account on the Mac.

If you are saying, you have two users, 1 an admin, and one non admin.

And you can login in the non admin.
All you have to do to find the name is look in:

/Users folder. which will be inside the Macs Hard disk folder.
Your admin user folder will be there.

It should be named the name you gave the admin account.

Hi, please don't cross-post. It makes people confused when they see the same topic more than once. Your other (original) topic about the same problem is here:

I merged the two threads.

harobed mik is a new forum member and the first few posts of new members don't show up until they are manually approved by a moderator. It is quite common for new members to post the same thing a second time when they don't see their first post appear. Usually we (the moderators) just delete the second post but this time the two posts got approved by different moderators.
