Locally cached email in Entourage?
Hi all, I really prefer Entourage to Mail for most things, but the one thing keeping Mail in my Dock is it's ability to locally cache emails. I have a powerbook, and a dialup connection, so I love that I can hit Get Mail in Mail, disconnect, and hit the road. I can view (and review) the messages later at my leisure. With Entourage, even if I've viewed the emails once, I can't review them unless I'm connected to the internet. Very frustrating. So does anyone know of a way to get it to behave like Mail in this aspect? By the way the accounts I'm primarily interested in are my mac.com accounts. Thanks!

it's easy to really like something when you spend a lot of money on it even if it's repugnant to your sensibilities. i think there's a marketing term for it, but i can't remember what those wiley wankers call it.
but aside from that, Entourage is just a good product. reminds me of the good ol' claris email client. they prolly bought the code. but aside from that, under, really, is that if eRage doesn't cache email locally, then what's taking up all that space in my eRage database file? % ll .../Microsoft\ User\ Data/Office\ X\ Identities/me/ total 13M -rw-r--r-- 1 merv wheel 12M Feb 13 22:15 Database -rw-r--r-- 1 merv wheel 17k Feb 13 22:10 Database Cache -rw-r--r-- 1 merv wheel 12k Feb 13 20:04 Mailing Lists -rw-r--r-- 1 merv wheel 12k Feb 13 20:04 Rules -rw-r--r-- 1 merv wheel 28k Feb 13 20:04 Signatures i'm pretty sure that the emails that my eRage retrieves are stored locally. when you say "I can't review them unless I'm connected to the internet." what happens when you browse thru your emails in eRage when you're not connected? i know that if i'm just viewing emails, there's no net access occuring because my lights don't go blinky blinky and i never want to see HTML mail, so i've disabled that option. there's a menu item at Entourage->Work Offline but that sounds unwholesome. and there's an account pref that says some nonsense about 'allow online access (shows account in folder list)' whatever the hell that means. |

Hi Merv, thanks for replying. Well when I try to read a message (whether I've already viewed it or not) and am not connected to the internet, it tries to connect. If I'm working offline and I click on a message, it doesn't appear in the "preview window" as it's called, ie I can't read it. I agree, I think the messages ARE stored locally, but I just can't access them. What's this about 'allow online access (shows account in folder list)'? I looked for it but couldn't find it. Thanks!

...it tries to connect... -- o i c is that via modem using PPPoE ? then, in Network preferences, /PPPoE\ ( PPPoE Options... ) uncheck [ ] connect automatically ... does that help? as for the 'allow online access,' that's a preference under menubar Tools->Accounts [ edit ] /Options\ and the help says... "Allow online access (shows account in folder list) Displays this account in the Folders list and allows you to read messages from this account without moving or copying them to this computer." which still doesn't help me understand it. |

Actually, I'm still stuck in the dark ages. I'm not using PPPoE, I have a DIAL UP connection
Still can't find that 'allow online access' thing either. Under my Tools->Accounts [ edit ] /Options\ , my options say Default Signature (options), Additional Headers, blah blah blah, but nothing about the online access. I have version 10.0.1. This is weird, the only reason I still keep Mail around is because I can check messages without being connected to the internet. I might just have to wait and hope this issue is addressed in a future Entourage update.

whoops, i didn't consider that your account may be something other that a POP account.
i see that the 'allow online access' switch is not in the IMAP account options. so, the 'Work Offline' option doesn't help you either? hmmm, there has got to be a simple solution to this that we're missing. unfortunately, the help is no help. here's all eRage help say when searching for 'offline' "Not connected to the Internet or to another network." and that's not even entirely correct or useful. i have offline storage that... nevermind. anyone else feel horribly foreshortened by our lovely online help systems? check out terminal.app's help menu item 'Terminal Help'. ha! that kills me. after waiting for the bloated bastard to load, it blurbs and offers to open terminal for me, which i just launched it from. oh, the humanity! <rant off> at this point, all i can bellow is "consult the internet!" mumble ask microsoft mumble |

Well even if I can't get Entourage to do what I want, I'm smiling after reading your post. To the search engine Robin!

I don't know if this will work, but there is an option in the Tools->Accounts, then select the Options tab, that says Download complete messages in Inbox. It was unchecked for my mac.com settings, and I'm pretty sure that unchecked is it's default setting.
