Exclamation Time Machine loses password after firmware update

I'm using Time Machine with a Time capsule. Recently installed a firmware update in the TC and now TM cannot connect. It asks for a password but does not recognize the correct password.

How can I force a change in the password so I don't have to wipe out my existing backups?

Hope you can help.

Have you tried to re-apply the firmware to see if this fixes the problem?

One other possibility is to try mounting the drive to another computer copy the data to another device (without using TM software)

Have you tried to use the default password "public" ?

Thanks for your ideas. This has been one in a long series of strange behavior since I switched from Airport Extreme to using a Time Capsule as my base station. I had to go back to scratch and re-establish my network, re-configure the Time Capsule and then basically use brute force to get the system working again.
