Strange Mouse Problem

Background: Macbook, running OS X 10.5.3

So I've been having some weird issues with my mouse of late. Sometimes, apparently unprompted by any action I've taken, the mouse button seems to stop working properly.

What seems to happen is that, whenever I click something, the currently selected window actually loses focus and then I can't click anything further. If I leave it for a bit, without doing anything, the problem just goes away after about 5-10 minutes.

To clarify this, It's not a hardware problem. It's replicable both using both the built in trackpad and a USB mouse and the mouse button is still clearly working as I can click some things, specifically the individual screens shown when I use the spaces shortcut and the individual windows when I use exposé. The behaviour seems, almost, as if there is something in front of the other windows which has permanent focus and is "stealing" clicks.

So, anyone heard of this before, or have any suggestions?

[Moved thread to Hardware and Peripherals forum, as it is a problem with a mouse]

Does the problem continue from a newly-created user on your computer?

What system hacks, haxies, "enhancements", third party menubar items, plugins for Safari, iChat, Mail, or any other system additions are you using?

What other USB peripherals do you have other than the mouse?
