In a Terminal window, copy/paste the following and then press Return:

sudo chflags nouchg "/Volumes/G-DRIVE Mini"
sudo chmod +x "/Volumes/G-DRIVE Mini"
echo "done"

You will be asked to supply your password (the password you normally supply when you log into your account). Note that the characters of your password are not displayed on the screen as you type them - this is a security measure. If this is the first time you have used the 'sudo' command, you will also get a small warning lecture about being careful and using it responsibly.

Never mind. I set the permissions by selecting "Apply to enclosed Items and that appeared to have repaired the drives issue.

Hi, everybody.

Help me, this poor soul.

My system is MacPro 2.8(8core)/ 10.6.8(latest updated)
I have some external disks including one array disk(3T).

One day all external disks is locked with custom access.
With help of data on internet(hintsforums) I have unlocked.
But just array disk has yet problem. The array disk is just readable, no access.
I tried to change to access with command "sudo chmod -R 775 /Volumes/RAID".
But the result is always "Unable to change file mode on /Volumes/RAID: Read-only file system"

So I ask help you, Masters.

The result of command
Quote:
ls -alO /Volumes
id
diskutil list
df
echo "done"

Hi @alexchoi and welcome.

can you run thsii command so we can see the ACL's
Code:
ls -alOe /Volumes
I see you are logged in as root. You should login as yourself "gupd" user i presume ?
And see if you have access.
You can correct things in Terminal anyway as "sudo" superuser.

Repairing File Permissions on External Volumes

Hi,
I'm in the process of recovering from a self inflicted file permissions mess. I want to have full read/write access to all files as administrator on the volumes attached via eSATA. I think I have it on some volumes but not on others. Suggestions?

Thanks so much,
Stewart

@muel3212 incomplete info.
What drive is not accessible ? There is only your Mac Hard disk showing ?

plug in the drive you are having problems with and run this set of commands.
Code:
ls -alOe /Volumes
id
diskutil list
df
echo "done"

Hi All,
I have a problem where both of my drives have locked up with 'custom' appearing in the permissions dialogue box. 1 drives has Leopard on and the other is just data. I have them in a Mac Pro which is currently running Snow Leopard and they mount on the desktop, just with big padlocks on them. This means I can no longer restart from Leopard if I wish to. I'm a Terminal virgin so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I Want To Thank ALL of you!

I have no idea what happened to my system. I was using iMovie for the first time creating a DVD of 8mm film and old photos for my brother's funeral. I kept running out of space on my system hard drive so I just deleted all my (specific folders) podcasts and moved my music over to my external HD. All of a sudden, the morning of the service, I am unable to write to the external HD d/t permission problems. This meant I couldn't access any of my iTunes music that wasn't already on my iPhone. This permission problem just got worse as I tried "Repair Permissions". Finally, iTunes just spun up to 100%+ CPU and stopped responding every time I booted it up. I figured I was in over my head and threw in the towel at 4AM this morning -- and made an appt for tomorrow with Genius Bar.

Well, I was able to cancel my AppleCare meeting because of finding this board. You guys are GREAT!!! It was scary, at first, with the sudo command -- the followup posts helped me relax a bit. I was really afraid of going from bad to worse. Instead, all is good now. Thank you.

You will be asked for your admin password, enter it at the command prompt. As you type it, nothing will be echoed back to the screen, this is a normal security precaution. When you are finished typing it, hit the Return key. If you've never used the 'sudo' command before, you will be given a warning about it's use. This is normal for the first time it's used in any user account.

Same issue Please help

Hi Trevor

I came across this post because I have the problem of an external drive being locked with permissions set to custom (I can't access the drive at all).

My MBP also won't boot - I suspect the same thing has happened to the internal drive as they both failed to open after I tried to reset the permissions through finder.

At the beginning of this thread you gave a diagnostic code to paste into terminal. Incase this is the first step, I have pasted the terminal response below.

I am very unfamiliar with terminal please excuse my ignorance.

Last login: Tue Oct 18 19:57:40 on console
ls -alO /Volumes192-168-1-3:~ lyndamills$ ls -alO /Volumes
total 13
drwxrwxrwt@ 10 root admin hidden 340 18 Oct 19:57 .
drwxrwxr-t 31 root admin - 1122 18 Oct 19:57 ..
drwxrwxr-x 10 lyndamills staff - 408 18 Oct 17:29 FAT
drw-rw-r-- 41 lyndamills staff uchg 1462 13 Oct 22:22 HD
dr-xr-xr-x 2 lyndamills staff - 1848 18 Oct 19:57 Iluminating Your Heart's Desire
drwxrwxrwx 35 lyndamills staff - 1258 13 Oct 21:40 MBP
drwxrwxr-t 26 lyndamills staff - 952 13 Oct 19:19 Mac OS X Install DVD
drwxrwxr-t 25 lyndamills staff - 918 15 Aug 2009 Mac OS X Install DVD 1
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin - 1 18 Oct 19:57 Macintosh HD -> /
drwxrwxr-x+ 34 root admin - 1224 13 Oct 21:40 New Mac Backup
192-168-1-3:~ lyndamills$

The drives highlighted red are the ones in question. MBP being the macbook pro's internal drive and HD is the external drive.

I have the MBP running in firewire mode from an imac becuase it won't boot.

I will be eternally greateful to anyone who can help with this.
