Hi, I'm very new to UNIX fixes. The locked external drive with custom permissions is also what I'm dealing with. Can you help? I tried to make sense of the commands for my situation, but I feel too uneasy with the process.
Here's what I got so far:
Craig:~ craigwaldron$ ls -alO /Volumes
total 8
drwxrwxrwt@ 5 root admin hidden 170 Dec 26 13:08 .
drwxrwxr-t 44 root admin - 1564 Dec 24 20:27 ..
drwxr-xr-x@ 16 craigwaldron craigwaldron - 544 Aug 29 09:03 GPSR
drw-rw-r-T@ 50 craigwaldron craigwaldron - 1768 Nov 25 18:42 LaCie
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin - 1 Dec 26 13:04 Macintosh HD -> /
Craig:~ craigwaldron$ id
uid=502(craigwaldron) gid=502(craigwaldron) groups=502(craigwaldron),98(_lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),102(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),79(_appserverusr),80(admin)
Craig:~ craigwaldron$ echo "done"

OK, you've got a couple of issues there. Ownership looks fine (so we didn't need to worry about your username after all), but you've got the user immutable flag set (the "uchg" above) and permissions are odd. The following commands should fix it:

chflags nouchg /Volumes/Media\ Drive
sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/Media\ Drive
echo "done"

The + in the permissions that you originally had above means that you have "extended security information", so let us know if the commands above don't take care of all the problem, and we'll look further at that.

Trevor

Amazing; worked like a charm here, too. THANK YOU!

Please help someone hard drives locked!

For Trevor OR anyone else please help!!!!

Hi, I am at my wits end and I am hoping that someone can help me. System crashed on my new MBP (My second one as my first one had the faulty nVidia chip sets) and lost all my data the first time. Mind you, I am a first time Mac user as well as a last year med student so I had to go to each of my prof/TAs and get all of my graded literature, scan it, convert it to text - this took me weeks, if not months to do.

Anyway, about 3 days ago my second MBP crashed, but this time I made a Time Machine backup, and a SuperDuper! backup (my past exp left me scared and paranoid lol). Which in this case, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as my TM Backup got corrupted (according to the Apple "specialist") and they wont help me because by fluke/somehow when I clicked cancel to restore from TM backup (after 5x of failed installs) it rebooted from SD! backup, which wasn't even showing up before.

I am not very tech savvy (and totally mac disabled) and I would def not bug you guys if you weren't my last hope.

I reinstalled the SD backup on Mac HD, but now, the four partitions on my hard drive have a lock beside the exHD icon. When I go to "get info", there isn't a lock checkbox and under privileges it shows: (me) as "custom", (me) as "custom" again, (staff) as "custom" and (everyone) as "no access".

I am running Leopard 10.5.6 and I don't have a clue as to how I can unlock those. I wouldn't have bugged you people as I understand you people are busy (sorry) if all of my med literature/notes/essays/assignments were not in those locked volumes!!!!! Please help!

I am hoping that some can find the time to help me. I only have 2 months left to graduate and I def don't have the energy or the time to scan everything again one by one since my exams are coming up soon and I need to do well in them to start my residency.

But, I can't study without my notes either - Please help me with this predicament!!!!

I am posting what trevor asked from a new member in 2003. I tried using Disk Util to verify permissions but all the volumes are grayed out. And is there a way to check if my Mac HD is in good order? (before it was just stuck on the initial white screen with the gear and Apple logo for 3 days so I am worried that it might do this again =s

I'm a newbie and am having the worst mac experience ever!!! SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!! you are my hero

We should be able to fix you up easily.

Copy/paste the commands below all at once. You will be asked for your administrator password, enter it at the command line. As you enter the password, nothing will be reflected back to the screen--this is a normal security precaution. Just type it in blind, and hit Return at the end of the password prompt. If you've not used the 'sudo' command before, you may get a warning about the dangers of using that command.

chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Fallen Angel Original"
chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Movies&TV Shows&Videos&ChronoSync"
chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Pictures&Documents&Personal Videos"
chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Time Machine Backup"
sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Fallen Angel Original"
sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Movies&TV Shows&Videos&ChronoSync"
sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Pictures&Documents&Personal Videos"
sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Time Machine Backup"
echo "done"

Let us know whether or not that fixed the problem. You may have ACLs that are blocking you on some of those volumes as well, which will require another set of commands to remove.

Hey trevor! Thank you soooo much. You are my new hero and when I save my first patient's life, I will have you to thank =] Of course, on the other hand when I kill my first patient I will have you to thank lol (sorry, a bit of dark humor that is all too prevalent in my line of profession).
Anyway... as advised by you, I did what you said and it did this:
Last login: Mon Mar 30 02:20:44 on ttys000
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Fallen Angel Original"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Movies&TV Shows&Videos&ChronoSync"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Pictures&Documents&Personal Videos"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Time Machine Backup"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Fallen Angel Original"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Movies&TV Shows&Videos&ChronoSync"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Pictures&Documents&Personal Videos"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Time Machine Backup"
Fallen-AngelAA-MBP:~ Fallen_AngelAA$ echo "done"
done

Kindly note that the volumes are still locked and I still can't open them. Also, this is my second try (when I tried the first time, it asked for the password and gave me the warning. After reading the warning I freaked out, thinking that I did something wrong and closed the terminal. Just advising you as I don't know if that makes a difference) Since I am tech disabled, I don't know if you were expecting your previous commands to unlock them or needed this info, nevertheless I really appreciate you helping and resolving this for me.

Trevor - you're a saint.

Dear Trevor,
I just want to say a big thank you to you for the time and care you have put in to this thread. I had a problem with a couple of external drives that had become locked (inexplicably) by an iMac, and Googling brought me here - thankfully.

There are probably thousands of people who have also benefited from your kindness and expertise who have taken your advice and just moved on in silence.

So, take a pat on the back for all you have done, especially from me as you have bailed me out, but on behalf of everyone else too.

Well done mate, and thanks again!
Cheers
Chris

Sorry to bother you yet again with more hard drive problems - I am having a very similar problem as these guys, but the permissions wotsit seems to be a new one within this thread! I am getting drwxrwxr-x instead of dr--rw----+ or any others as you can see:

drwxrwxrwt@ 4 root admin hidden 136 31 Mar 10:18 .
drwxrwxr-t 34 root admin - 1224 28 Mar 10:42 ..
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin - 1 31 Mar 09:53 Macintosh HD -> /
drwxrwxr-x 10 Pert staff - 1530 7 Mar 13:00 Time Machine Backups

Time Machine Backups is the one playing silly buggers.

Thank you so much for your time, and I commend your patience within this thread.

Pert.

1) Is your username "Pert"? If so, there would seem to be no problem with the ownership & permissions on that drive. What kind of problem are you experiencing?

2) It is always desirable to show us (via copy & paste) the commands you ran in Terminal as well as the results of those commands. (You only showed the results)

Cheers for the quick reply!

My problem is that it is saying the disk is read only, not even letting me (username "pert") erase the disk or even fully run a verification on it, let alone copy and paste my files so as to make sure they don't get lost. I'm most likely being a doofus, but when trying to find solutions this thread seemed to fit what was happening to me the most.

After plugging it in, it automatically tries to back up and comes up with:

'Disk Repair

The disk "Time Machine Backups" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible'

Limited functionality allows me to explore the disk, butt when trying to copy anything I get:

'Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code - 1426)'

When trying to paste anything onto it I get:

'The item could not be moved because "Time Machine Backups" cannot be modified'

In the sharing permissions, despite the fact the privilege list says I can read & write, above the list it says i can only read.

When trying to verify it says:

'First Aid Failed

Disk Utility stopped verifying "Time Machine Backups" because the following error was encountered:

Filesystem verify or repair failed'

And when trying to erase it within seconds it says:

'Disk Erased failed with the error:

Operation timed out'

The privileges list led me to believe that perhaps it was this permissions thing that this thread is about, but perhaps a more simple diagnosis would be that it is just plain ole knackered - if so very sorry!

It sounds very much to me like this disk has hardware problems.

Oh well! It just happened so suddenly, i.e. within a few hours of last use without being moved from its place, so I hoped. Thank you for your time though!

Is the name of the problematic volume REALLY exactly "miniStack 465 1"? Is that final 1 what you deliberately named it? Or do you have two directory entries of "miniStack 465", and the second one with the final "1" was added automatically so that there would not be a conflict?

External drive locked with custom access

hi i know this is posted elsewhere but i dont want to do this wrong and rather do it with someone step by step..which would help me do it right if that dont sound too stupid

I have an external haddrive which is partitioned into two erm well partitions...
They are named as the following:

MAXTOR

TIME MACHINE (BACKUP ONLY)

somehow the permissions have screwed up and they are both locked. I click on them in finder and a notice comes up saying : i dont have sufficient privelliges.

Anyone help me please and thankyou in advance

I've put your post into the existing thread, to keep everything in one place. You are welcome to show us the results of (at least) the following Terminal command:

# If you are using Tiger or previous
ls -alo /Volumes
id
echo "done"

# If you are using Leopard
ls -alO /Volumes
id
echo "done"

Please let us see the results of the commands above, copy/pasted into your Terminal. Your Terminal app is in /Applications/Utilities.
