Safari wont start?!?
What is wrong?
It acts like it wants to open but then stalls.

A little more information would be good. What exactly does it do? Does it bounce in the dock? Anything in the menu bar? Does a window open? Any error messages? Is Safari the only application experiencing this issue? What about Apple Mail or Address Book?
I would always start with a permissions check and ditching the plist (located at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist). Does this achieve anything? Have you tried anything else?

What messages appear in your logs when that happens? You can easily view your logs using the Console app, in /Applications/Utilities. Notice that log entries have a time and date stamp, so you can match up events in the real world with entries in the logs.

6/12/08 2:49:54 PM Safari[1129] Unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting This is what I got from the console app. It does not bounce but looks like its about to then stops and the desktop blinks slightly. Mail has some wierd things like there is a no connection little icon by the inbo and near the sent items it numbers some of my mail as if its new mail comming in. But as far as it working, it works just fine so does address book.

I've seen the same error pop up on a few other mac forums in the past and the suggestions were usually: 1. Reinstall Safari --download the newest version of Safari from the Apple Website and install it over your current version This seemed to solve the problem in most cases.. You're lucky it didn't happen with an app that's not available for download 2. Do a disk permissions repair -- /Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>Repair Disk Permissions 3. Do a disk repair (different from #2)-- /Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>Verify Disk then Repair Disk Hope I helped

I was hoping you helped too. No changes yet. I am not sure if I want to reinstall until I get to the bottom of this. What if I am just masking a problem?

Thank you for that link. Seems I am in the same shoes however..... I get this message when I try to install Safari's latest version.... You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer My computer tells me I have 10.5.3. I think something happened when I did an update. Any other suggestions?

I have a work around...
There's a corrupt binary somewhere in that download.
I was able to move forward to the latest developer version by registering at http://developer.apple.com, then logging in. From there you should be at the Developer Connection | Member Site. There is a Downloads link. Go there and under Downloads in the right column, click on the Safari link. You will see (as of today) a group of downloads for Safari 4 Developer Preview. In my case, I downloaded Safari 4 Developer Preview for Leopard (Disk Image), file size 26.8 MB, date posted 11 Jun 2008. If you have the previous version of Safari to go back to, you can use the Safari40PreviewUninstall.pkg. If not, which I had to do, you can install the Safari40Leo.pkg. Who knows whether this is a workable fix yet, but for now Safari opens and works fine. Since it is a preview, I plan to move to the released version as soon as possible to avoid further problems. |
