iCal event reminder time problem

When I create a new event in iCal and set a reminder time (e.g., day before at 9:30AM) then click done, if I immediately click on the event again then it has a random reminder time (e.g., day before at 11:30PM). This happens every single time that I create a new event. Each time I have to reopen the event and re-enter the desired reminder time. It remembers it after I re-enter it. Any suggestions?
