External Hard Disk not visible

I have a G5 running OSX 10.4.11. My external hard disc vanished from the desktop. I have tried disk utility but the disk is grayed out.

Is the drive USB or firewire?
unplug the drive from the computer and swap port assignments, or firewire swap end connectors on the drive itself.

Failing that, restart.

Failing that, boot from the DiskWarrior CD to attempt to repair it.
