Maximum RAM in Tangerine iBook

Anyone out there try stuffing 512 meg of RAM in their older, clamsheff, Tangerine iBook? I've read here,

link

that this works, but wanted to hear from others before buying the RAM.

Any specifics or links on the type of RAM to get would be great as well. Thanks,

John

I don't have specific experience, but this has been true with many Macintosh models over the years. They take larger memory modules than Apple specifies.

I get memory from othe world computing.

Pocking around at Other Worlds web site, it looks like this is the one to get.

Unless I hear from anyone to the contrary, guess I'll go for it.

Well, I ordered the 512 meg RAM card linked to above, installed it yesterday into my Tangerine iBook, rebooted, and had 576 MB of RAM available. The iBook definitely feels a bit zippier. For the record, its running 10.2.3.

Thanks for the report, John.

I have a client who wants to update a couple of clamshell iMacs to OS X. I expect we'll be ordering RAM for them soon.

512MB RAM chip, Graphite iBook, OS X.II.III

I just put a 512 MB chip in a Graphite iBook 366 with no problems. It's running 10.2.3, and running it fairly well.

The video system is definitely weak. I tried Cro-Mag rally and it was not playable, with a frame rate of about 2 or 3 seconds per frame. Chimera and AppleWorks run just fine, though.

I had the OS X installer erase the hard disk before installing and didn't install some of the extra languages and printer drivers. The 6 Gig drive shows 4 GB free.

Whats next?

I haven't tried very many games (okay one) on my iBook, but its running fine; "Deimos Rising" from Ambrosia works great.

Now I need to get the courage up to perform the necessary surgery to replace the 6 gig hard drive with a nice, big 40 or 60 gig one.

Can anyone comment on the difficulty of this procedure? I have a link somewhere around here with photos of the gory mess. Looks fairly intimidating.

Are there any other upgrades/improvements/hacks that any one can recommend or think of for a clamshell iBook? No need for any "sell it and buy a new iBook" comments.
