Vanishing files to a locked folder!?

Hi.

This must be a serious bug, and I have managed to replicate it consistently multiple times, as follows:

1) Create a folder DDD (names do not matter). The folder may contain various files or be empty. Lock the folder (using the GUI or the Terminal).

2) Create a folder SSS and create some *useless* files in it. The folders SSS and DDD must be in different drives.

3) Try to move SSS (keep Cmd down during drag & drop) into DDD.

4) You will be asked for your password; provide it.

5) Then either the progress bar will never stop (and you will be forced to re-launch Finder (Dock, Alt down) ), or in over 80% of the cases, the folder SSS and all or most its contents will vanish !!!

Note, that if SSS & DDD are in the dame disk, after you provide password, the operation will not be completed (as expected, but SSS is safe in this case.

I would be surprised if this bug is not reported elsewhere (could not find anything), but it seems quite nasty...

Can anybody else reproduce it?

Thanks in advance,

Yannis

The loss of files/folders that are being moved (as opposed to the more usual copy operation) between drives when a failure occurs was a bug that received attention some months back. I thought it had been fixed.
What version of OS X do you have?

I am astonished by this bug. I am using 10.5.2 with all latest updates applied, on a recently bought Intel Mac Mini. Do you think I should report it to Apple (not sure how though) ?.

Here's some links to articles about the data loss bug that I mentioned above:

This was supposed to have been fixed in 10.5.1:

Thanks hayne. I found out reading your links that there is quite a bit on that prior 10.5.1 and I am quite amazed they have not fixed it yet... I reported it to bugreport and also posted it in the support forum there anyway in case I am heard...

Just an hour ago I reproduced the same behaviour in my office's (Intel) iMac (fully up to date with no funny setups). DDD was in the 2nd partition and it did not even need to be in an external HD by the way!
After repeating a few times, I can say that if SSS is inside ~ there is more chance for the folder and all its files being lost. If it is outside then in most cases the progress bar got stuck; but even then a large number of the files were eaten.

I tried to experiment with DDD not being locked but read-only; No problem there though, which means Locking is an issue; both/either uchange & schange flags cause this problem.

Many thanks for your assistance with this!
