iCal beef.

Why, if almost every other OS X save can be done with Cmd-S, can this not be done in iCal??

What are you trying to save exactly? :S So far as I know iCal auto-saves all calendars and events/to-dos automatically.

Yeah, I'm confused Gavin. What are you trying to save exactly? In fact, I just checked the iCal menus and there is no save command at all...

I wasn't very clear there - apologies.

I meant that when I edit an appointment, I need to mouse over to the Done button. What a pain! Nearly all other apps that I use can deal with Cmd-S, but not iCal.

iCal chicken

Actually, in iCal, the "save" command has been implemented in an even better way than other apps. You press command+E to "edit", and press once more for "done editing event". After that, just click off of the dialogue box to close it. Very clean and simple.

I completely disagree.

Why the extra click? In all other apps that I use, it is a simple Cmd-s.

Yeah, but you still have to click on the tiny red "X" to close the window in other apps.
Either that or command+W to close the open window.
At least in iCal you can click anywhere outside of the dialogue box to close it, or press escape.

If you absolutely can't adjust your left hand to press command+E, then you can go into Sys Prefs / Keyboard & Mouse / Keyboard Shortcuts and change the shortcut to command+S.

I just noticed a bug in my iCal that happens after trying to edit certain locked calendars. After trying to edit events in those calendars, I am unable to edit other events by pressing command+E. If I have created the events within iCal, then the shortcut works as it should.
