Rats! I can't right-click. Haven't configured the one-button mouse/trackpad correctly yet.

Glanz, keep 'em screen shots comin'. I'm bound to like the next one better!!
Actually, I haven't really found a dekstop layout that I really like. I would have thought that your cat liked the polka-dotted jaguar theme (if there is such available).
Even though you show bad taste in desktop layouts, I'll bear with it as your sharing your knowledge is much appreciated.

G

OK we'll do that now. Click on the foot on the lower left..... then go to settings, then "Gnome Control Center" OR EVEN EASIER, click on the toolbox icon in the Gnome panel...[the bar on the bottom]... Everything is in there........ Have fun

If you have a three button PC mouse, that will work too

You may try "alt/option" [left side] plus click.

Well, that's just it, I can't get that blasted Gnome panel back. And I only have the mouse-button on the trackpad. No right-clicking. In the Control Center I have keyboard + Mouse in the Peripherals section, but only options for mouse buttons (plural!) are left and right handed (+acceleration and threshold).
Hmm.

Edit:
I tried every (well almost) possible key combination + clicking. No good. Alt key works as expected for dragging windows, though.
Thanks for keeping at it!

open a terminal and type panel then hit enter. If that does not work, look on the lower left and right yo see if there's a wee little bar. If so click in that. Yoy could choose a key sequence to emulate a right click too.

Glanz, sorry for the delay. Work is going on here and there are some distractions.

Anyway, there is no right click option on the powerbook. All modifier keys do nothing. And I have a couple of applets in the taskbar that I would like to remove. Isn't there another way?

Gnome panel doesn't do it as tjj said, same here.

You all will either have to go back into X config, [XFree86Config](I think) or get a two or three button mouse to try it while you are in the GControl panel ..... Now if you are on gpm, and can't control the mouse, you'll have to stop gpm if it's running as a daemon.... thusly

/etc/init.d/gpm stop

[remember that, you may have to do a "start"

then check to see if you have the same mouse probs

if that works, remove the link from the run level

rm /etc/rc3.d/S20gpm

########

Or go right to the XF configuration files and edit them yourself as root to accomodate your Meece, mouses, tappy thingies, etc.

How frustrating that when you are looking around at things in the gnome menus, and you don't have a description of what they are always, so you click on one and it's then put into the taskbar and menubar, redundant there, and you want to remove them after looking at them and deciding they aren't what you wanted, that you then have to pretty much reinstall gnome to get it back because you don't have modifier keys or a three button mouse on a laptop to access the correct menu.

In the meantime, I highly recommend Windowmaker, At least you will be able to set keys and have more control.

Don't you have a "port" into which you can plug a mouse????

I've got windowmaker on here now but it is awful ugly with only 16 bit color depth. An xterm wouldn't come up at first until after several tries. Still no modifier keys to access any of the options menus or settings. And those icons from the applets I had clicked on are still in the menubar and taskbar because they are part of gdm. Oh well, I just have to use it as is in a somewhat crippled state.

Don't worry!!! I have a pretty good idea of what to do, but I want to try it on my machine first. I'll get back tomorrow on that because I don't want to make a mistake and get you into worse trouble. I am positive we'll fix it. This is nothing compared to a FreeBSD install on completely supported hardware.

Well, you can get one for about 12 bucks I believe. Then we'll have to make sure that port is recognized.

I was thinking of disabling the applet to see if that might get rid of the icons in the menubar and taskbar. Then I also thought maybe just relaunching gdm to see if that would do the trick. But I'm not certain how to do that, something like kill the pid and then startx again?

tjj, I don't know if this is common information to laptop computer users, but I found to adjust the trackpad settings, you use sudo/sbin/trackpad with the notap, tap, or lock options.
Code:
sudo /sbin/trackpad notap
sudo /sbin/trackpad lock
That turns off the tap clicking which I don't like because it's too sensitive for my clumsy hands and I don't spend that much time on laptops to develop that kind of dexterity.
