Jaguar Installing Classic

I have 10.2.3 installed right now, with one partition containing the system/apps/home and another for extra files. Will installing 9.2.x on the X partition break anything? Both partitions are using HFS+.

It shouldn't ... I seem to recall doing this a while ago. I did it on an external drive, but it was an external drive containing OS X. Everything OS 9 installs go in the OS 9 system folder (except for the apps it installs, of course), but it won't try to use /Applications for any of those...

Well I just noticed a slight problem. The OS 9 setup doesn't recognize any of the partitions. I don't recall which OS I ran Drive Setup in to create them, but it may be possible that the disk drivers aren't installed...? Any way to install them without reformatting for the third time this week?

There is a definite "gotcha" when formatting drives with disk utility in OS X. If you don't check the "Install Mac OS 9 drivers" box they will not be recognized when booting from an OS 9 CD.

I don't know of any way around this but to reformat.

Well that's what I ended up doing. Luckily I've got my firewire HDD.

You know it depends on how you plan on using Mac OS 9.2. On my PowerBook I formatted the drive without the Mac OS 9 drivers because I never planned on booting up in Mac OS 9 on that system. I made a generic Mac OS 9.2.1 installation and then made a disk image of it and saved it to a CD. When I was done with the 10.2 install I just copied over the System Folder from that image to a folder in Applications called Classic Stuff. When I was done I aimed the Classic system preferences to that System Folder and Classic started up without any problems (after adding the files that were needed to the System Folder).

If you were like me and never planned on booting into Mac OS 9, this seemed like the best course of action. Plus I have a strong aversion to having to install operating systems more than once on a system.

Well I just bought Quake 3 and even though it runs in OS X now with 1.32, the 1.32 patch requires an OS 9 version to be installed. Other than that I'd never use classic.

Until Disk Warrior comes out on an OS X bootable CD I think it's a good idea to install the OS 9 drivers. The ability to run disk warrior is not something I want to give up.
