Mail.app + GMail

Hello,
I have just started to use Mail, I was only using the web interface before, and there are a couple of things I don't get :

- Is there a way to delete a message on Mail, and therefore on GMail automatically ? It only deletes the Mail one, the message stays on the server, what's the point of that ?

- Following the 1st question, is there a way to make deleted mails on Mail but that are still on the server appear BACK on mail, if the 1st option is not available ?

Thank you !

You are probably using POP forwarding feature. Try using Gmail's IMAP feature instead, which keeps everything in sync.

open mail app/ preferences/accounts/advanced.. click on-remove copy from server after retrieving a message-- then select from the drop down, the time limit for that... right away, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month..

Different people have different needs. I have my server set to delete emails after 6 months. In business you sometimes need to refer back to older mails. Now, whilst I have them on the Mac, the server copy is a handy backup.

That is why it is an option, not a fixed setting.

Ok so I'm using the IMAP setting, and everything is working great.
But about the contacts :

- I have contacts on the Gmail server and none in the address book
Still when I send an email to someone who is "known" by Mail.app, the address enters automatically.
But nothing happens for addresses on Gmail that are not known, do I absolutely need to export them as vCards and then import to Address Book or is there a way to work it out with the IMAP thing ?

The address appears automatically in Mail.app simply because you used it recently.

gmail does the same, but only if you use the webmail.

This does not seem quite right to me. I would think that IMAP would always be in sync and this means that if I leave an e-mail in the inbox it should also stay on the server, while if I move it to a local folder on my Mac it should go in Trash on the server.

Another issue that I found is that if I create labels for incoming mail, these messages will appear in a folder in my Mail.app, but the rules that I have to move them in different folders are applied occasionally. In practice I am subscribed to a number of mailing lists and I have many nice folders that I use to collect and read them. Now I get a folder in the IMAP folder in Mail.app and strangely enough not all mails are copied to the mailing list folder.
Anyone has seen this before? I'm thinking of removing the label to fix Mail.app that is my primary client, but having it labelled on the webmail would have been nicer.

If you move a message out of an IMAP account into a folder under the name of the IMAP account, it will be moved into the like folder on the IMAP server. If you move it to a folder under "On My Mac" the message will be copied and then deleted from the IMAP server.

That was not my point, Vegas. My point was that I expected the message to end in my Inbox and be processed normally by the "Rules" that I have created.

I think I found the problem. Here's what happens:
  • I have IMAP enabled
  • I created a couple of filters in gmail that attach a label to e-mails coming from a certain sender
  • If I read e-mails via gmail, I see them in my inbox with the appropriate label. I can also see them using the filters in the bottom left. This is pretty standard gmail functionality
  • If I check my e-mail with Mail.app 2.1.2 (latest on Tiger, AFAIK) e-mails are downloaded and moved from the Inbox to an IMAP folder on the server with the same name of the label I created. The e-mails are still marked as "Unread", but are not in the Inbox anymore.
  • Rules on incoming messages are applied fairly randomly, on a few tens of e-mails I received, MOST were processed, but a few were not processed!

Removing the filters makes the IMAP folders disappear when you first synchronized and rules are properly applied thereafter. When you remove the filters, e-mails that were in the IMAP folders go to the "All Mail" folder and never reappear in the Inbox (not on gmail nor on Mail.app).

Should this become a hint?

I have a related Question Using Mail 3/Leaopard 10.52 and Gmail with Imap.

Apple Mail has a number of Folder Collections:

-Mailboxes (In, Sent, etc.)
-Reminders
-On My Mac
-RSS
-Named IMAP Folders (though this bottom section is Unlabeled as a
section e.g. Gmail accounts show up here and their mail is displayed here).

My Question invoves the Mailboxes vs. Imap section. The Imap section works as it should with each gmail account and its subfolders.

Some of this Gmail structure and its mail is also viewable from the Mailbox section but it seems random. The Parent Inbox or Sent sometimes contains the mail too but not usually the Mailbox section for the specefic Gmail account in question.

I guess my question is why does Apple Mail Keep both an Imap section and a Mail Box section of folder structure for the Imap/Gmail accounts. I do not mind the Imap/Gmail being in the last section. Really the only two things that are of concern is the Visual Space the Partially supported Mailbox section for Imap Gmail wastes and just out of curiosity why things are partially supported in the Mailbox section instead of All or No support for the Mailbox section for Imap/Gmail.

There seems to be a lot of contradictory advice out there from mapping individual folders etc.

The following seems to be a good method in my limited testing. In one step it seems to force Gmail to use Apple's folder scheme and supresses the seemingly haphazzad arrangement of Gmail.

In your Account Preferences, under the Advanced Tab, set the IMAP Path Prefix to: Gmail.

On the down side It not seem to supppot Catagories like Starred etc.

It would be really nice to have a definitely Gmail set up or Pros and Cons of various methods. Gmail's offical suggestions seem to fall short.

Sure of that Las_Vegas ? Doesn't work like this here...

If I move a message from my Gmail Inbox to a "On My Mac" folder, the message dissapear from my Gmail Inbox, but is still in my Gmail [All messages]...

Is this happened just to me ?

unfortunately, the google help pages, for me at least, are haphazard and don't seem to offer the content i'm looking for. maybe my search phrases are either too specific, or not specific enough but i can't seem to get the answer i need (one that will work at least) from Gmail or google help pages. from reading this thread it seems there are a few different problems with Gmail per topic!! so i'm abandoning trying to fix it for now.

It's a matter of setup. Integration is not perfect, but I think gmail is very good and I'm pleased with my current setup.

Here are a couple of help pages that should explain to you why e-mails still appear in "All Mail" and how to trash e-mails:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=78755
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...67&topic=12815

One thing that I noticed that does not work as expected is that if you have a message marked as spam and you simply click the button "Accepted" (or "Not Spam", I'm unsure how it is in English) in your Mail.app, gmail will not know it. You need to move the message to a different folder in order to remove the spam tag on gmail.
