Angry Printers show up in CUPS, but not Print & Fax prefpane

Like the title says, my printers do not show up in the Print & Fax preference pane, but do show up in the CUPS web interface. I can add them just fine, but they never show up in the prefpane, only in CUPS. (10.5.1, fully updated).

It's something specific to my user account (I think)-- the Print & Fax prefpane works as expected in one other account on the machine.

I've done all the usual stuff: reset printing system, repaired permissions, deleted every printing-related preference file I can find... all to no avail.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

I'm trying to avoid having to do an archive & install, especially since I don't know if it will do the trick. I'd prefer to track this down and fix it rather than just pave over it, but I've spent a couple hours trying and need the input of others.

Any help appreciated.

This happened to me with an HP and a brothers printer. You never say what model or brand of printer you are using. In both cases finding and removing ALL old software and preferences fixed the problem. The HP was an elaborate operation following instructions I downloaded from the HP web site.
