Mail.app sent mail not being saved when using Gmail IMAP

I just started using GMail's new IMAP and I am having issues with the emails I write...
Often when I start typing a new email I get an Error message saying "Message Could Not be Found" and then after I send it the message is nowhere to be found.
I am online and the Gmail account is online and I have even set the Gmail SENT folder as the Mail.app SENT folder from the "Mailbox > Use this Mailbox For..." menu in Mail.app.
Can anyone suggest any solutions?
Thanks

any ideas?
I discovered another strange behavior in the meantime:
when I log in to gmail.com there is nothing in the inbox! isn't imap supposed to show me everything I see on my email client?
something must be wrong...
