Leopard, Nokia N70, Bluetooth Modem, MPPE and MS-CHAP

I've been successfully using my Nokia N70 cellphone as a GPRS modem over bluetooth for a while now (under Panther and Tiger).

I've been trying to get it working under Leopard and keep getting this error on the console.

'MPPE required, but MS-CHAP[v2] auth not performed'

All the reference I can find on the web suggests that pppd is being started up with an option requiring this MPPE (Microsoft) Encryption.

Since the same phone and settings work fine under Panther and Tiger, I'm thinking its a default setting somewhere in Leopard that needs adjusting? There's nothing on the dialogs so I thought I'd wrap /usr/sbin/pppd with a script and see how it's getting called...perhaps intercept and disable the requirement. That led me to /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/PPPController.bundle and now I'm at a dead end.

Anyone have any thoughts ? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller ?

Thanks in advance,

Alan

I ran into exactly the same problem with Treo 750 and was able to solve it by following these steps:

1. Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
2. Find PPP entry for the Bluetooth connection (search for "Bluetooth-Modem")
3. Find "CCPEnabled" parameter that belongs to this entry and replace "1" with "0"
4. Save the file
5. Connect and enjoy.

Basically it looks like Leopard enforces MPPE encryption/compression now and it's not supported by many GSM providers. I wish they made this setting configurable via GUI...

I had to delete the preference file to get this to work. Finally! It seems to work.

Now I have a new problem... my VPN seems to require some sort of encrypted password. When I delete the "options" file from my PPP folder, VPN works but bluetooth DUN does not, and vice versa.

Can I have two sets of options for VPN and DUN?

thanks!

Was able to find this on HowardForums:

http://www.howardforums.com/printthr...3&page=2&pp=30

Tells how to have multiple files for settings for specific connections (e.g. VPN vs. Bluetooth Modem)
