Exclamation How to restore certain apps

I am going to re-install Tiger, i have a bootable external HD that i will clone from my internal before erasing the internal drive. I have some plugins in some of my apps that i want to be able to re-install, but i don't have the diskimage or anything that they came on, and i can't get them online without paying. What should i do?

It would also be good if there was a way to avoid re-downloading all Tiger's updates. Is there any way to copy them, then re-install them once i've re-installed Tiger?

Are you implying that these are pirated plugins?

Can you explain why you want to erase your hard drive? Perhaps there is another easier way to get the result you want.

I want to reset everything so as to get that 'New OS' feeling.
Maybe i'm not making much sense, i'd like to weed-out some of the junk that's wormed it's way into my hard drive, and start afresh. 'Junk' isn't only antiqued apps and pictures that were funny several years ago, it's everything that can accumalate on a hard drive after about a year and a half of use.
I think it's a bit like a sort of 'crust' that is made of cookies, logs, data from deleted apps* , etc.

Either that or i just miss that 'New Mac' feel, the defalt dock size, desktop, dashboard widgets...or that i need to find that lost sleep pronto-ish.

*I used to install almost everything on the Macworld cover CD, and every app probably left a digital 'mark' on my Mac, and having installed the entire contents of several cover CD's, has probably left a digital crust that could be hindering performance (with helper processes for no-longer used apps for example).

There's certainly a lot of digital crust that grows over time on Windows, thanks to the stupid Windows Registry. This is not nearly as big a problem with the Mac. The only things that leave "crust" are drivers, StartupItems, and hacks, and these can be eliminated using "Archive and Install".

Archive and Install replaces your operating system, e.g. the "System" folder, but leaves your users and installed apps alone.

That's what I would recommend for you--do an Archive and Install of Tiger, rather than erasing. If you want that new Mac feel, you can also start a new user.

Then, just copy the plugins that you want to save from your old folder named System (which is archived) into your new folder named System.

Thanks! I'll try that out when i have time (sadly not now). How much time do you think it would take to do a archive and install with 30GB of data in Users, 8GB of apps, and a total of 54 GB of data on the entire drive (including system folders)?

Not much time at all - almost certainly less than an hour.
The data under the /Users folder is not touched at all in an "archive & install" and hence the size of it is irrelevant.

I didn't see a option to archive & install, maybe its Leopard only, but i had a backup anyway.
I've got everything set up now, address book and adium contacts, iTunes files, documents, movies, pictures, widgets etc and now my Mac runs a lot faster. I think that maybe that is something to do with all the extra processes, as before the re-install, there were loads of processes, but now there's only 27, and that's with almost* all apps etc installed.

*With the exception ClamXav sentry and 1 Mail plugin that i have yet to get running again.

No, Archive and Install has been around for years. The Tiger screenshot is below:

Where did you get that screen? I didn't see anything like that when i installed. I booted from the DVD and did it from there, did you do it a different way (if there is any)?

EDIT: I'm trying to get ClamXav set up again, but when i try to install the anti-virus engine, when the 'Select Destination' screen comes up, no destinations appear, but before re-installing, my hard drive appeared no problems.

After selecting your destination drive, but before continuing, click the "Options…" button.
