Mail forwarding and freepops

I looked at some threads on how to get hotmail into mail. I was told the easiest way would be to get gmail and forward my mail from hotmail to gmail, I got the app called free pops but i have no idea how to get it to forward hotmail to gmail can someone tell me how i can do this. And does anyone know any other free apps that will forward hotmail to gmail??

Ok maybe i dont need a 3rd party app, i just need hotmail to forward my email to gmail, but it wont let me do this even though it says "You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or custom domains." but when i put in my gmail account it says "You're only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again."

To set up a free Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail account in Mac OS X Mail:

Install MacFreePOPs and make sure the freepopsd service is running.
Select Mail | Preferences... from the menu in Mac OS X Mail.
Go to the Accounts category.
Click + beneath the Accounts list.
Make sure POP is selected under Account Type:.
Enter "Windows Live Hotmail" under Account Description:.
Type your name under Full Name:.
Enter your Windows Live Hotmail address under Email Address:.
Click Continue.
Enter "localhost" (without the quotation marks) under Incoming Mail Server:.
Type your full Windows Live Hotmail address under User Name:.
Mac OS X Mail probably has already entered your user name, and it's enough to append "@hotmail.com" to complete the address.
Enter your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:.
Click Continue.
Click Continue again, ignoring the error.
We'll take care of that in a bit.
Make sure Password is selected under Authentication:.
Leave Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) unchecked.
Select an existing mail server to send mail under Outgoing Mail Server:.
You cannot send mail through MacFreePOPs. If you have no outgoing mail server through your ISP, you can use a Gmail or AIM Mail account's.
Click Continue.
Click Continue again.
Now click Done.
Highlight the "Windows Live Hotmail account in the Accounts list.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Enter "2000" (not including the quotation marks) under Port:.
Close the Accounts window.
Click Save.

Yes you need it always running.

In extra options mark

Auto start service ...
Quit MacFreePOPs ...
Keep service alive ...
Hide this window...

And add FreePOPs to your Login list, so you never worry about it and it'll feel like your not using it .

Here is a Screenshot of how I have it .

I tried this and mail wouldn't seem to retain my HM pass.

Also, Luiz S.: Where on earth did you get that screenshot? All I got was a message from FreePops telling me to double-click to stop/start. Was I supposed to do something with a HM Lua file?

This appy is confusing.

Hi... I installed this but a window asking for my password appears constantly, as if I'm not using the correct password... any thoughts?

This is my last hope to use Hotmail through Mail, because HTTPMail is not working.

Thanks!

Luiz S,

I followed the instructions to a T and it works great. Thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge.

I do have one question that I was hoping you or someone else might be able to answer, How do I view my folders other than "inbox", "sent", etc? I have folders for mail that I get from Apple, electronic bills, etc.

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated.

Kel101,

Thanks for reply, sounds like it would be a basic feature as I assume most people have the need for more then just an inbox folder to sort all their various different incoming email. I'll do some research and if I find anything I'll be sure to update to this thread.

Thanks,

V

And add FreePOPs to your Login list, so you never worry about it and it'll feel like your not using it .

Here's a silly question but how do I add it to my Login list? What is a Login list and where would I find that?

Thanks,

V

(application that you want to launch at login)

However...

Can't locate FreePOPs. Did you mean MacFreePOPs? Can't locate FreePOPs as a compiled OSX app. So do I have to call the UNIX executable within MacFreePOPs and add that to the login items?

P.S. Never mind. Downloaded the file from the FreePOPs site, reinstalled, and added to Login Items.

Also, can't see the Inbox contents. Only new mails. How do I fix this? Thanks for the tips, the sharing, and the advice.

Ok, when you start to set up a new account.

Click + beneath the Accounts list.
Make sure POP is selected under Account Type:.
Enter "Yahoo" (or what ever you want) under Account Description:.
Type your name under Full Name:.
Enter your yahoo address under Email Address:.
Click Continue.
Enter "127.0.0.1" (without the quotation marks)[this changes to previous set up] under Incoming Mail Server:.
Type your full yahoo address under User Name:.
Mac OS X Mail probably has already entered your user name, and it's enough to append "@yahoo.com" to complete the address.
Enter your yahoo password under Password:.
Click Continue.
Click Continue again, ignoring the error.
Make sure Password is selected under Authentication:.
Leave Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) unchecked.
Select an existing mail server to send mail under Outgoing Mail Server:.
check " use only this server "
Click Continue.
check " take account online "
Click Continue again.
Now click Done.
Highlight the yahoo account in the Accounts list.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Enter "2000" (not including the quotation marks) under Port:.
Close the Accounts window.
Click Save

•• This worked for me, hope it helps you.

Absolutely fantastic and works perfectly using the steps above Thank you very much Luiz I've been using my older Hotmail account with Mail.app for ages and didn't really think this was possible ... now to find out how to revert the "look" of my Hotmail account back to how it used to be ... I recall Hotmail giving me the opportunity to test run the new look but it seems that once you accept there's no turning back ... looked all through my account and there's no option to toggle the Windows Live/Old Hotmail look ...
