g5 imac blue screen, will safe boot

after a very rare system wide freeze my imac will not boot past the blue screen, but will safe boot, and boot from cd.

removed login items
removed all peripherals (except keyboard)
ran disk utility repair from cd - no errors
ran tiger cache cleaner - all tasks
ran disk warrior from cd - rebuilt directory
ran apple hardware test - passed
removed airport kexts
removed airport card
reset pram
erased boot drive and re-installed tiger

at the blue screen the cursor disappears, the hd grinds for a min, then the mouse comes back, then nothing
it seems something that does not load in safe boot is causing the hang, but other than airport i don't know what else to try. as this happens on a clean install i would guess there is a hardware issue. i read on some forum the AHT can miss hardware issues...

any ideas welcome...

where to look in the console logs mebby?

which of the startup items below are not loaded in safe boot?
(apple says none are, but this not true; network time is still working)

AppleShare
SNMP
RemoteDesktopAgent
NetworkTime
Apache
AppServices
Metadata
Disks
FibreChannel
CrashReporter
AuthServer
IPServices
PrintingServices
NIS
NFS
IFCStart

2.0 ghz g5 imac 17"
10.4.10

ty in advance

Using your Console app, in /Applications/Utilities, show us your console.log and your system.log for starters. And if any error messages that look relevant refer to other specific logs, show us those as well.

Hook up the video out adapter to an external monitor and see what it does.

"Note: If you're using an iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) computer, your SMU was already reset when you unplugged and replugged the computer."

turns out mine is the als imac
still i went through the procedure.

now i'll remove all the startup items and add them one by one and see what happens.

well with all items removed it will safe boot still, but not normal boot. guess i'm off the the shop
