I'm not sure the exact specs, I left those at home. The odd thing is that I've never had a problem with this drive before. I've made fake backups before (install OS X and manually copy drivers and all) with no problem. The only problem I've ever encountered was trying ditto or Psync, which makes me think there is some cache problem. Then again, I'm no expert. Thanks for the help.

That is odd. Can you post the console msgs you get or error msgs you get with ditto or psync?

I don't get any error messages. Everything just freezes. If I have Process Viewer or Terminal (running top) up, the CPU time will go to zero after a while, coinciding with the freezing of the drive. So it seems as if the process freezes, not doing anything. This happens for both ditto and the perl scripts for Psync. Console doesn't seem to tell me anything, because the system freezes before anything can be reported. That's why I don't think it's just me being impatient, the processes actually stop working after some time. Thanks for the help.

This is a long shot - but do you happen to have any of the Unsanity products running - FruitMenu, Haxials, etc (visit www.unsanity.com to find out what they make)? I suffered about 6 months of unexplained crashes, freezes, and general misconduct from my system when I had FruitMenu installed. Not per se FruitMenu that is the problem - its their "application enhancer" that cause numerous problems in numerous apps. Unfortunately their apps won't run without this damn "addon". As soon as I disabled it - my system has been rock solid since and the unexplainable things have stopped. I really miss my FruitMenu - but I can live without for the stability.

Actually, I do. The old version of metallizer was giving me a lot of problems, and even now it still screws up on stuff like Chimera. I'm going to trash app enhancer and its components and see if that helps. Thanks.

One thing you might try - and this is a good overall debugging technique. Create a virgin user on your system - something like "testuser" or something like that. When you install stuff - make sure and install it to YOUR library (as opposed to systemwide library). Now - as in this case when you have a problem - logout and log back in with the testuser you created. This basically puts you in a nice clean system install without addons, extensions, etc. No try again with whatever is giving you grief and see if you can reproduce it. If you can't then you know you can narrow your troubles down to something in your own personal acct - addon, cmm, extension, etc.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone to helped, but I had to fly off back home today and I won't be with the drive and my computer for three weeks. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix the drive, but I'll try when I get back. Thanks again for all the help.
