Using PB 15" (Aluminimum) to drive a Dell 30"
Hi all,
I know from the specs that a PB 15" can't drive the Dell 30". However, hope springeth eternal, i attached a 30" to my PB and it works, unfortunately at 1200x800 resolution. I have previously attached an 18" at 1400x900 (something similar) resolution to my laptop and the OS X recognized the higher resolution for the the attached monitor, my point being that the OS X on my PB can drive higher resolutions than the laptop screen. So my question, well okay, i can't get 2560x1900 (Dells resolution) but is there some where i can up the resolution that I am currently getting? Thanks for your time Saptarshi |

The later PBG4 will drive dual-link DVI, and your big display should be supported just fine. If yours is older, then dual-link is not really possible, and your big display just won't be fully used.
Which processor speed do you have? |

Mine is the older one (just before the October release,2005) at 1.5Ghz.

I would say that you are out of luck to get dual-link without trading to a newer PowerBook that supports dual-link. So, that big display would be mostly wasted. You will do well by going with a smaller display - 22-24-inch should be good, but look at the specs to see if that one needs dual-link, also.

Have you tried using the included DVI to VGA adapter that came with your PowerBook? Attach that to a VGA cable, and plug the VGA cable into your Dell. You may be able to get a higher resolution, or even full resolution of the Dell that way. Of course, you lose the all-digital advantage of DVI, but it sounds like that may be worth it to you.

Hmm,
that might be an option (the dvi-vga converter) but the Dell monitor is in my lab and not at home and I do not have access to the vga cables i.e the dell monitor only has (as far as i can see) those dvi plugs. Well, it was good trying. Saptarshi |

Really? What model is it? My Dell 24" model 2405FPW has a VGA input (they call it D-SUB) right next to the DVI, S-Video, Composite, and Component inputs. I'm a bit shocked that they would remove those for the 30". Trevor

24-inch seem to ship with both VGA and DVI, but not the big screens.
Funny to think of a 24-inch as a small screen! ![]() I think I can safely say that 30-inch displays don't have VGA connectors. Although, I suppose that if you needed a really big screen with large images (lower res), then vga should be possible. All those pixels won't function without dual-link DVI. |

From the webpage, it mentions that the 30" dell has only two presets
(http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...175&redirect=1) 1280x800 (which i get) and 2560x1600 But on the 24" webpage, VGA output is specifically mentioned http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=320-5647 I didn't see VGA output on the 22". Strange. Regards Saptarshi |
