Smile Worked for me

My primary language is Icelandic. This does work. Changed the language so the English is on top, U.S. English for sort, reboot, burn disk with Toast.

Both Toast and Disk Utility present the '73' error otherwise.

Compressed Air....

Well the voodoo didn't work in Snow Leopard but compressed air blowing did. I DID load up smcFanControl and pulled the temp down 10c though.

Incredible! It works! This is now at the top of my list for unbelievably arcane fixes...

This worked for me. I've been trying to burn an .img using the same Memorex DVD+R DL for a year with no luck. Unbelievable.

Had same issue on Mac Mini with Superdrive. Would burn DVD-R, not CD-R's. Tried different brand media, no luck. Tried "international" fix, which, if I recall correctly, might have worked once, but then no good. Tried an external drive, worked fine with original media I had problems with (which eliminated software and media brand as the possible culprit). Tried the compressed air and now am able to burn CD-R's again.

so after reading this entire post i decided to try it, thought the iso may have been to large, thought the media may have been bad (memorex single layer) thought my drive was malfunctioning... language thing worked, only thing that has worked on my MBP basically since i've started trying to burn dvds on it (a year ago) haven't tried it multiple times and i turned the speed down to 2.4 instead of 6 (not sure if that helped) but i installed a new copy of snow leopard, first dvd worked until 45%, failed, next one i got the same laser calibration message. did the language thing and turned the speed down and it worked

I tried to burn 3 DVDs on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Got the same error message every time. The media doesn't seem to be the problem fine because one is being burnt on my MacBook with Leopard as I write this (won't know for sure until it finishes). I had this superdrive replaced once under Apple Care, so I will have it checked out tomorrow.

The above fix may be coincident. There is no such logic exists.

I had a different problem, and my solution was different, but related. So i'm posting my experience in the hopes that we can learn something based on the correlation.

It's not coincidence and it's not voodoo.
There's something going on here, and it's something we shouldn't have to blindly figure out ourselves, or rely on Luck the next time we use our optical drives.

I was actually looking for a fix tonight for a couple of DVDs with some important files that wouldn't mount, or would mount as "untitled" and with "no items". After all the "logical" troubleshooting wasn't helping, it was another thread in another forum that lead me here. I thought it was hilarious that people were saying that it worked, and i tried it.

I did exactly as landricks solution and it didn't work.

Then i tried dragging chinese to the top (i live in china),
I set the other options to chinese as well.
In the Formats tab, under "Region:" i changed China (english) to China (chinese).
obviously my "logic" was to make everything as Chinese as possible.
Rather than rebooting, I just logged out and in.

It worked.

The DVD mounted with the correct name, I copied the files no problem.
This after trying for the entire night.
Coincidence?

Then i changed everything back to before:
English/English/Standard.
In the Formats tab, I was no longer given the option China (English),
which is bugging me now too, I only get China (Chinese) -
no big deal, just means time and date is in Chinese.
Log out, Log in...

Same DVD mounts as untitled with no items.
Coincidence?

Is there any other kind of discussion anywhere else
related to International Prefs affecting optical drives' usability?

Talking Clean the lazer to fix this problem

I have a macbook pro 2.4 15" running 10.5.8

My superdrive stopped working 5 months ago. It would read cd/dvd and write cd but NOT dvd.

I googled and came to your site. I tried all the options above except cleaning the lazer.

I decided to clean the lazer. I got my drivers license and a thin cloth used for cleaning reading glasses. I wrapped the cloth tightly around the license and slid the card in and out about 5/6 times on the left hand side of the superdrive slot.

I loaded a disk and successfully burned a DVD immediately.

Im so so so HAPPY to have my drive working 100% again

That crazy fix didn't work for me (Although I live in Europe, so it might need amending).

Cleaning the Superdrive (mac mini-intel 1st-gen) did work for me. I used a cleaning cloth for glasses wrapped around a CD. A real CD-cleaner Disk or pressurized air might be a more recommended way of cleansing.

It worked

not the voodoo. definitely the "blast the hell out of the superdrive with air" method though.

I've had trouble on and off with my drive with some of the fixes mentioned helping temporarily. Hopefully today, it is resolved. I was able to burn CDs and DVDs but not DVD DLs. The disks worked fine on another computer so I felt that was enough ammo that it wasn't the disks. The apple store agreed with me, and after checking to make sure it wasn't the OS, they replaced the drive. That still didn't work! So the repair guy also replaced the flex cable and that did the trick. I love applecare...

It is odd, but it worked for me 1 time as well. The second time a DVD did not launch anymore however. And I also registered just to tell this. It's really true!

on a macbook 10.5.4 with matshita dvd-r uj 857e firmware revision zb0e and it did not work.

however, i believe it does have something to do with international, because i switch back and fourth between japanese and english all the time. if i install an application when in japanese setting, the same app. will not run when in english setting and vice versa. (this is only for certain apps though)

MacBook Pro, the nutty fix didn't work.

After reading this forum, I picked it up and blew in the drive. That worked.

Thanks.

HI all, ok I AM a new member in the UK

I found this thread as I pasted the subject into google

I have a mac mini 2.26Ghz with Leopard, The fix dos'nt work with me at all I'm afraid. Up to about 6 weeks ago I was using the superdrive many times with any media no problem at all also in boot camop with Windows Vista

Yet to try a CD cleaner this may work but I'm doubtful, which is the best one to get or the best 'home made' version ??

Thanks in advance for any help

Language process did not work for me

I know a lot of first posters have com ein here to say the process worked but it did not work for me.

Last night i was burning a DVD and my son bumped my MacBook Pro the burn failed saying ....the device failed to calibrate.... etc.
When i tried to burn again, i got the same message. I had DVD problems in the past with cheap media, so made sure i had a decent brand, so i knew that was not my problem.
I tried to burn a disc from work to make sure... but i got the same error. then i saw this thread with the language process. I follwed it twice, but i got the same error.

I eventually tracked down a lens cleaner, ran it through 2 or 3 times and i can now burn again.
