Directory refresh over network problem

Running OSX 10.2 server, have a problem with all OS 9.2 clients: when changes are made on the server (i.e. files deleted, moved) they don't show up on the client machines unless they re-mount the server drive.
If you delete a folder from the server and try to open it from the client, you get a item cannot be found error message.
Also I had 60Mb available on a drive so I cleared off 2Gb, this displayed correctly on the server but on the client it still said 60Mb available, I tried to copy an 80Mb file to it and it said not enough room.
any ideas
