Firefox works, Safari says I don't have permission (and other odd happenings)
I just installed Comcast cable broadband and my Mac mini (OS 10.4.10) is acting screwy. Safari tells me "You don't have permission to access http://...on this server" for any and all web sites, and the Help Viewer tells me the same thing. However, I'm surfing the web just fine with Firefox. iTunes will not let me access the iStore, telling me I don't have the right permissions, nor will it permit me to update my podcasts. Finally, I can't access my iDisk from the Go menu, but I can access it via .Mac on the web.
I suspect it's some sort of permissions issue, although I've ran the disk utility to verify/repair permissions, but to no avail. I didn't change any of the settings on my computer, simply unplugged it from my old house (where it was working fine) and moved it to my new house. Comcast help desk is clueless...any ideas out there?

Oops, I posted too soon. I had some proxy servers incorrectly checked in network preferences.

I suspect that the problem is related to a proxy setting in your Network Preferences.
Safari (and other Apple-supplied apps) make use of the proxy settings that are in Network Preferences but Firefox (and many other 3rd-party apps) do not. See the screen capture below. The default state is to have no proxies checked.
