Overview of iPhone bugs

.
AppleHound claims to have found 68 iPhone bugs, most of which are insignificant or obscure. Their conclusion is that "the OS X graphical interface and applications are extremely solid".

Anyone found additional bugs worth mentioning?
Anything truly significant?

Interesting Report.

Also, a very damning overview of the flawed security model used by the operating system:
  • everything runs as the superuser
  • No memory protection scheme
  • No address randomisation
I find the first one of these particularly surprising. It's as if Apple had too much belief in their own ability to prevent malicious code running on the iPhone.

Let's just hope the resulting patches address these serious design flaws.

It makes me feel slightly less annoyed that the iPhone isn't available in the UK yet

Um, yes, here's a major bug: no To-Do list in calendar!

To me, this has been a huge problem: no To-Do list in iCal. I have had to move to web-based task lists. These suck: EDGE is very slow and I haven't been able to find a good solution despite spending many hours on the problem. iCal on the Mac has task lists, so it never occurred to me that a major part of the "smart phone" I would lose vis a viz the Treo700 would be task lists. I currently use rememberthemilk.com, but it's just not good enough, too slow.

Here's another HUGE bug: NO COPY AND PASTE! Wow. Just, wow. There are many reasons to love this phone, but unfortunately, many reasons to hate it. Unless Apple improves it, it is destined for obscurity IMHO.

The fact that everything has to be on the web sucks too. I made a mistake in switching, I'm starting to think.

Huh? Just because something MIGHT be fixed in some later update doesn't mean it doesn't suck RIGHT NOW. It's a bug. If it's fixed later, then great. That will be a bugfix. Since Apple does not make their intentions known, all I can do is complain right now, because right now it's ridiculous.

Also, another huge huge bug: No video recording!!!? WTF? I cannot believe Apple screwed this pooch that bad. They obviously ran out of time and had to push out the door what they had at the time, but it is not good enough yet...

That being said, the overall experience is better than on my Treo700p. So I won't switch back.

A bug is an error or defect in hardware or software that causes a program to malfunction. Lack of some feature that you want is not a bug, it is just a lack of a feature that you want.

In no place is there any promise of video recording (or for that matter copy/paste, to-do list in iCal, etc.), so there's no program malfunction, and no bug.

Nevertheless it bugs him.

Trevor is right, WealthyChef. If you’re yearning for features that aren’t there yet, be they hardware or software related, your gripes/wishes should be posted in a different thread.

LOL, well said. I understand your point about it maybe being off topic and I apologize for those that feel that way, but I still think that if Steve Jobs wants to call this the world's best iPhone, then if it lacks basic features, they become bugs. I mean, if you used a text editor on your Mac and it did not support copy/paste, you would call that a bug, not a "missing feature." It's a fine line sometimes. In a modern, $700 cell phone, the lack of a video feature FEELS more like a bug than just something I wished were there. Anyhow, I've taken enough bandwidth. I suggest we drop it. We've made our points.

Your points are perfectly legitimate.

However, it makes for better and more orderly discussion if we have one thread devoted to wish lists / lacking features, and this separate one here on bugs.

I’m suggesting you actually repost (not verbatum) in such a thread. Who knows? Maybe someone at Apple will be inspired to fulfill your wishes!

Best regards,
ArcticStones
