Java sucks.
Any time I run anything with it, it screws up. Either just crashes, or if in a browser, crashes the browser. Now before you show me this, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380 let me say that I have done everything that page says, even though it SHOULDN'T apply to me, because I have OS 10.4.10 and already have the 10.3.9 update installed. I tried java -version many a time, and I always got the same response: Error occurred during initialization of VM java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: java/util/concurrent/atomic/AtomicLong Trace/BPT trap No matter what I would put in, as long as the word "java" was first, that would come up. "Java gfdshgfldjhgsf," and that would come up. I think my computer just doesn't even recognize java at all. Also, Finder lameness. I saw the other topic about it, but it didn't really help me. I also thought that I might have a different problem than them. Whenever I use the search thing in the finder, it crashes. I will post the crash log if someone needs it. And reminds me how to get it -.- |

You are confusing me. Do you have 10.4 or 10.3 ? The 10.3.9 update doesn't make sense in the context of 10.4
You can get to the crash logs by using the "Console" app that is under /Applications/Utilities

EXACTLY. I dont understand why its screwing up. The 10.3.9 update seems like the only thing it could be. Also, the actual crash log is really long. Is there any specific part that I should paste? |

Let's start over.
1) What version of OS X do you have on your Mac? 2) What do you get from the following commands (copy & paste them into a Terminal window): id uname -a ls -l /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions 3) Please attach the Java crash log as a plain text file using the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom when you post. You will be able to attach files after you have posted 3 times.

click 'Post Reply' - i.e., don't use the quick reply box - and you'll find the 'Manage Attachments' button way down in the 'Additional Options' section.

1) Please also show us the results of the following Terminal commands:
which java ls -l ls -l /usr/bin/java ls -l /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Commands/java 2) You said that you followed the instructions of the Apple doc that relates to problems with the 10.3.9 update. Those instructions are not relevant for 10.4 and might have made things worse.

Which java = /usr/bin/java
ls -l ls -l /usr/bin/java = ls -l ls -l /usr/bin/java ls: -l: No such file or directory ls: ls: No such file or directory lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 77 Feb 15 20:22 /usr/bin/java -> /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Commands/java ls -l /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Commands/java = -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 109580 Feb 7 23:05 /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Commands/java Someone told me that it might be Safari 3. Ever since I installed it, things have been going weird. My iTunes library vanishes, java screws up, the finder is buggy... Either that or my computer is just poo. |

You might consider doing an "archive and install" from the Install CD/DVD being sure to select the option to preserve users.
(See this Apple docL http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120) This will keep all your user files and just replace the OS X system files and applications. You should run Software Update afterwards to get your system up to date again. It would be best if you did a backup of your user files first - just in case something goes wrong (even though this isn't very likely). But before you do any of that, you should do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there. See this Apple doc: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
