Question all applications quitting unexpectedly

I have a Powermac G4 with a 1.6 Dual upgrade card and running on Panther 10.3.9. I recently tried to put Firefox the latest version for Mac on it. Now even after uninstalling, fsck -fy-ing, repairing permissions and the disk with First Aid and DiskWarrior (trust me I've done a lot of googling these past hours) I am stuck. I know it's probably something small I am forgetting or not doing because I can open any program, and as soon as go to do something in the program it unexpectedly quits. HELP!

Please show us the crash logs - you can get to these logs by using the "Console" application.

Also check if the problems exist if you log in as a different user.

Look for the crash logs of the apps you are having trouble with.
Start with the Logs button at top left of the Console.app window.

Attach the logs as .txt files.

You can create a .txt file by using TextEdit and copy/pasting the text into a new TextEdit window, then saving it as "plain text" (in a file with a .txt suffix). Or, easier than TextEdit would be to use the free 3rd-party app TextWrangler - it is easier since there is no option to save as styled text: TextWrangler only handles plain text.

You can just extract the part of the crash log that shows the most recent crash - crash logs accumulate all of the crashes for that particular program but the one we are interested in is the most recent crash.
Alternately, you could use Finder's "Create Archive" (in the File menu) on the .txt file to zip it, which would reduce its size considerably.

Safari seems to be crashing while dealing with menu code, and you have some contextual menu plugins; therefore, the first thing I'd try is to move those plugins aside and see if Safari stops crashing:
Code:
~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/FileXaminer CM.plugin
~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/FileXaminer Super Delete CM.plugin
~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ToastIt.plugin
Just move these over to you Desktop or someplace else convenient for temporary holding.

The Firefox crash looks different, so it's hard to tell if this will help it.

I went to the folder and there was nothing in there - I didn't know which other crash report you needed because there were a lot of programs that I tried to open but they all quit. Here is the system log
Attached Files
File Type: txt system.txt (12.6 KB, 153 views)

I think you must be going to the wrong folder.
Note that ~ = your home folder, so ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items is the folder named "Contextual Menu Items" under the "Library" folder in your home folder.

I see that TextWrangler also crashed - that crash log would also be interesting.

ok, let's go back to standard debugging...
  • first, create a new user, and see if you have the same problems there.
  • second, restart in safe mode and see if you have the problems there.
if the answer to the first is no, you have something in your user library folder (contextual menu, system hack, application enhancer(ape)) that's mucking things up.

if the answer to the first is yes, but to the second is no, you have something funky in your hard drive library folder.

if the answer to both questions is yes... time to archive and install. sorry.

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html

In particular, be sure to try logging in as a different user to see if the problem exists there. (Create a new user via the Accounts preference panel if you only have the one user account so far.)

Also be sure to do both permission repair and filesystem repair.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

And be sure to check the RAM with 'memtest':

I would like to thank everyone for their help, but I just went ahead and re-installed everything clean. Didn't want to but what can you do. I am having a problem with one of the programs that was previously installed on there. Reason 3.0 now will not install back on there. What's wrong now?

No idea.
But maybe if you told us some details (error messages, describe exactly waht you see, etc), we might stand a chance.
