apple remote on a imac g5 1.8

hello, I have purchased an iMac 20" g5 with a 1.8 ghz processor. Will an Apple Remote work with this?

No, the remote requires an IR (infrared) port to work. Your older iMac does not have one. Any iMac with the built-in iSight camera also has an IR port, and yours does not.

Will front row still work? Can an IR port be added? What about Spaces when Leopard comes out?

Yes, front row will work, but not through the remote. Others have used that, but you can't even install Front Row on your iMac without a patch of some kind.
I haven't heard of any way to add an IR port.
I have no idea what Spaces will need for an interface/controller, and how that will work. You would have to control that some other way, the Apple remote would not work on your iMac without the IR port. I suppose some of the other wireless remote options that have been available for the Mac should function OK, but I have no idea if you would get full control....
