OK, I'm back where I started. The disk is repaired thanks to DiscWarrior. I then ran fsck -y and that fixed a minor error so at least the disc appears to be sound now.

However I cannot see a cd in my drive in MacOS 10.2.2. Disc Utility cannot see the hard drive. I still can't mount .dmg files. And worryingly some application icons, when double clicked, launch other completely separate applications.

Any Ideas?
