thatch: hmm, what do you want to do?

create an SUID script to vector a char device to a block device thru a named pipe?

i think that act may entitle you to lifetime imprisonment under the new homeland security bill

I've got rid of cd, but still no joy in Disk Utility. No volumes, however, show up as icons in the left hand pane.

gdali:

Did you restart your machine? That might be necessary to fix things.

If you have restarted and Disk Utility still is not working correctly, maybe you should start up in single-user mode and do 'fsck -y' repeatedly until it says the disk appears fine. To start in single-user mode, hold Commad-S while starting up until you see some text messages on your screen.

I tried fsck -y in single user mode earlier. I kept getting errors in the B-Tree, tried it about ten time but still no complete fix.

well, that is serious.

you should try fsck without the -y and transcribe what it asks when it bangs into errors.

Sounds like the precise situation where one might need Disk Warrior to me.

mT,

Yes, I heard about the new homeland security laws going into affect. But I was referring to the permutations we were working toward earlier in this thread:

c Character special file.
s/p Socket link/named pipe.
w Whiteout.

Anyway, I gotta go now, but will be back later this evening sometime.

***Rebuilding catalog B-tree

Uh oh, keys outof order. That's bad. I've gotten that a few times and ended up backing up and erasing the drive. Hope it works out better for you, gsdali.

Keys out of order, ouch. I don't think this was caused by the upgrade, but I think a reformat is in order, sorry about that.

BTW, changing a bit the subject but I think it's within the scope of this thread. I understand that low-level formats are only necessary for SCSI disks as IDE disks seem to dynamically allocate bad blocks.

What truth is there to this statement, and does this mean that a format is the best you can do to get your disk to pristine condition? (versus low-level format for a scsi disk).

a) isn't the catalog b-tree fixed rather well by diskWarrior?

b) a low-level format can be counter-productive and should only be a last resort (i believe) for a crufty disk that all other attempts fail. SCSI and IDE automatically re-map bad blocks.

I'll try that, but there's a 2 week back order on disk warrior bootable cds. I'll try with Norton too, although first indication is that norton can't see the drive either.

No need to wait for a bootable DiskWarrior CD; if you have DiskWarrior v.2.1.1 on your Classic partition, boot from there and run it.

HELP

Tried rebooting into 9.2.1 got a flashing system folder. tapped option to get the selection screen no system folders found. Booted up to 9.2 from cd. 9.2 can't see the HD, it wanted to initialise it, so can't select 10.2.2 system folder. is there a key combination to get the computer to start back into 10.2.2.

For information its a powerbook G3 500 with firewire. i just want to get it back up into 10.2.2 so I can't back up the whole computer and reformat the drive, which seems to be the best option.

Unfortunately I've left my 10.1 and 10.2 disks at the other end of the country and can't get to them until monday.

thanksfor any help,

Ed

If your OS X volume is in the first partition, hold down the 'd' key to boot to the first partition.

If they share a partition, hold down 'x' and restart. That should get you to OS X.

Try zapping the pram as you start up, press command+option+p+r.
This cured some problems that I was having. in OS X.

Thread Title:

10.2.2 is out

Based on what I read here, that's my verdict too.

(Someday I'm sure I'll upgrade, but for now it's 10.1.5 and holding.)

10.2.2 seems to affected my Services menu in an adverse way - most all apps (including the Finder) will no longer display the Services in the Services menu - click and hold and nothing - no flyout, nothing.

I have deleted ALL caches, and service related prefs 3 times, and restarted more - still no luck. Short list....

Service Available
--------------------
Chimera
Terminal

Services Not Available
--------------------------
Eudora
BBEdit
Finder

Note - services have always been available in teh above - only missing after 10.2.2 update.
