To merv: wtf? 'nidump passwd .' works fine here. I wonder if other nidump/niutil commands work? I'm using only a local netinfo domain for the record.

Apache update

I am running apache on one of my macs, hosting a couple of sites. I see that this update also includes apache 1.3.27 update. Does anyone know if this breaks the current install? What do I need to back up besides httpd.conf?

Re: Enable Journalling in OS X (not Server)

Did you recognise a performance drop?

What system are you using (so readers can compare!)

Thanks

hmm, been causing hard hangs here -- complete lockups after issuing ni* commands. must investigate.

as for braindead, hmm, did your syslogd blow up? look for syslogd in your process table.

i'm getting disturbing netinfo errors...

Nov 11 19:00:18 gunther nidump: NetInfo timeout connecting to local domain, sleeping

can anyone get this to squawk?

% nidump passwd .

hangs here with above log message

mervtormel,

No, syslogd is working fine. I'm getting the normal logging for wu-imap and bind. Not a single lookupd or netinfo error in any of the logs since the upgrade. Console gives the old annoying iCal helper logging every friggin hour.

nidump passwd . works perfectly well on both machines here, even the one that's screwed up....is your netinfo.db munged?

I've enabled journalling on one of our PB G4s and on one (of four) disks on my Dual 1.25. I didn't notice a performance hit on either, but have not done any disk intensive tasks of any conseqeuence. I'll be firing up my medium format film scanner this weekend though and will be able to tell you more then. One expects journalling to give a 5-15% performance hit on disk writing ops, less on reading, so I suspect most folks won't notice a thing.

Probably not the right place to ask, but I see that 10.2.2 is supposed to fix some PowerPoint Animation problems. Has anyone tried this? Unfortunately, I am traveling and need PPT a lot for the next two weeks...so I will not be upgrading until my schedule gives me time to tinker. (1st rule of uprgades: don't do it just before a critical deadline!)

Does EndNote still work? (I don't know why it wouldn't.)

Hello,

Just preparing here, so far we've had: Netinfo problems, general problems and strange funkiness. On the upside it seems to _not_ break sendmail and apache for once. I'll wait a few more messages and upgrade myself.

Poll posted

I've just posted a poll for general evaluations in the Software News and Reviews forum. You can find it here. . That thread also points back to this one for troubleshooting assistance.

Carry on!

Question

Can anyone explain the special permissions for the hfs.util file? Are they absolute mode plus an extra character?

Code:
We are using special permissions for the file or directory
./System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util.
New permissions are 33261
In 10.2.1, the same file has -rwsr-xr-x. I haven't upgraded yet so I don't know what they are after the repair permission has been run. Can someone please post what they are after the repair?

Anyone having a problem with screen captures not displaying? Do a command-shift-4 on a window and then try to open the resultant screen-capture-PDF. I get nothing. This bug was supposed to be fixed, I thought.

The good news, fortunately, is that there's a great free alternative to Apple's built-in screen capture Fkey.

If you do command-shift-4 and then click, you get a zero-length PDF file. Is that what you are seeing? You are supposed to sweep out an area with the mouse, not just click. So a zero-length file seems like it is behaving correctly.

If you want it to capture a window, press Space after doing command-shift-4

where did you get that quote?

$ chmod 33261 poopies
chmod: invalid mode string: `33261'

$ chmod 4755 poopies ; ll poopies
-rwsr-xr-x 1 merv staff 36k Nov 12 13:21 poopies*

after a fresh diskutil repairPermissions / here...

$ ll /System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel 43k Nov 11 15:09 /System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util

screen captures, all forms, work here.

I'm not sure whether to feel like an idiot or be mad because it doesn't work like it did in Mac OSes previous to X.

I'm settling for feeling slightly foolish. It worked great. Sigh.

mT,

Thanks. I got that quote from earlier in this same thread, on page 1 from silicone diode. And I've seen it elsewhere too as others have posted about it. I still don't know what the five digit number means though. Your perms look to be the same as mine in 10.2.1. So, special perms.... what does that mean do you suppose?
