Question Ethernet adaptor (en 2)

I have a MacBookPro Duo Core, running OS 10.4.9, and a new Airport Extreme Base station. All of a sudden, I also have a new option in System preferences, under Network: Ethernet Adaptor (en 2). What is it? Where did it come from? Could it in anyway be in any way responsible for a series of system-wide crashes that I had a few days ago? The crashes continued through most of the day. I ran Norton's Anti Virus, which found no problem, and Apple's disk utility which assured me that everything was fine. I wasted a great deal of time and lost some of my morning's work. Then everything returned to normal.

I am very suspicious of the mysterious Ethernet Adaptor en 2.

Does the adapter say it's connected?

Did you recently install an application called Parallels?

Go back to the Network settings, write down the MAC address of your new en2. Click on the "Ethernet" tab, write down the 6 pairs of letter/numbers at "Ethernet ID". I will bet a nickel that it has the same MAC address of your real ethernet card. Next we have to figure out where it came from, but I think giskard is already on that!

99% sure it's Parallels or it's ilk.

Probably not related, but Norton (now Symantec)'s utilities have been known to cause some damage to Macs. I don't think it's AV program would do any harm, but you never know...

Take a look around the forums for Norton problems.

I have never encountered something like that and never heard people speak of something similar. If you believe this is Parallels, maybe you should try visiting Parallels Forum. They will definitely help, I've had a few issues that they helped me to solve

Yes. The adaptor is connected.

I have had Parallels for quite a while.
This is a new problem.

I went to the ethernet tab. The address is very different from the adaptor address.

I don't use Norton utilities. I just ran the antivirus program.

Is everyone suggesting that the ethernet adaptor is probably
not the cause of the crashes? I guess my basic question has to do
with the function and origin of "ethernet adaptor en2." It just appeared
a few days ago. Is it part of OS10.4.9? Is it part of the AirportExtreme base station? Should I disconnect it? If so, why? Where can I learn more about it?

Are saying the MAC address (also called the Ethernet ID) is different?! I don't mean the TCP/IP address, that could be the same or different, the MAC address is specific to an actual piece of hardware.

Did you update versions of Parallels recently? Or change to Bridged Networking from say, Shared Networking? Possibly because you installed Vista in Parallels?

All you have to do is go into the Network prefpane and look at the defined port configurations. My guess is that it's from Parallels.

I don't believe it. I know it. That's HOW bridged networking works with Parallels.
