Entourage not deleting

Entourage 2004 11.3.3
Mac OS X 10.4.9 PPC
Using a secure IMAP account to my own server (I use the server with secure IMAP and Sylpheed, no problems)

Some messages are flagged with a graphic X and a down arrow in the Priority column (red ! column). Deleting these messages doesn't do anything. I do have "Hide IMAP messages marked for deletion".

Some messages, such as "Today's Headlines" from NYTimes.com cannot be deleted either (they don't have the graphic X and a down arrow).

Most messages can be deleted, and disappear from the screen (though of course they aren't actually deleted until expunged).

My wife (the Apple person) has said that after using Entourage some messages are deleted without her actually deleting them. (Makes me wonder if Entourage might be confusing message IDs for deletion, though I couldn't reproduce this)

So: Why can't some messages be deleted?
Why are others mysteriously disappearing?

Please note I'm not much of an Apple person - more linux, so it's very possible I've missed something quite basic.

Try control-clicking the folder and choosing "Repair Message List".
