G5 won't read DVD's
I burned all my mp3's to DVD data discs in itunes. I burned the disc's on my g4 quicksilver 833mhz. These discs work on every machine I've tried, pc's, mac's,...except for G5's (I've tried 2 different machines). They just get spit back out after a few seconds. except for one or two. very odd. Also, I have an external DVD burner (pioneer 112-D) with a USB 2.0 casing and my G5 doesn't recognize that burner at all. no response. What's with this?

On your G5, are you attaching the burner to one of the built-in USB ports or to a hub? If you are using a hub, there may be a power issue, even if the drive has its own power source.
I can't offer a suggestion about your burned discs, but I can attest to the fact that various devices, i.e. Macs, PCs, DVD players, etc. can be picky with the "brands" of media they will accept (especially blank). Maybe you can buy a 5 pack of "high quality" blank media (or a different brand if you are already using "high quality" media) and see if it makes a difference? |

I plugged the external burner into a USB port on the back of the machine, no hub. i tried cd's and dvd's in it. no reponse from the g5.
as for the internal drive, I've used all different types of DVD's. I'm guessing it's the burn from my g4. Although they work EVERYWHERE else, and I can't understand why some of them would work. and why apple wouldn't pick up something like this. I experienced this with the first generation g5's. I thought it might have been addressed by now. |

Apple does not make optical drives. There's no way that Apple would pick up something like this. You must mean Pioneer, or Sony, or LiteOn, or Matsushita, etc. would pick up something like this. You can find out who makes the optical drive in your G5s by looking in System Profiler, which is in /Applications/Utilities, or you can get to it by going to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info. Inability to read a disc is either the fault of dirt and dust on the lens (which would mean that you should use a cleaning disc, available at any competent electronics or computer store), misalignment (which the repair for costs more than a new optical drive--buy a new one), or media idiosyncracies. When I say media idiosyncracies, I mean that some brands of media just don't work well with some optical drives. If that's the case, buy another brand of media.
Who makes the bridge chipset that translates between USB and ATAPI in your case? This can also be discovered in System Profiler. OR, if System Profiler doesn't even see this USB case, buy a new USB cable. Trevor

Does a PC recognize the drive / enclosure? Could be a driver issue. Several manufacturers - especially the cheapest ones - do not support OSX.

The external drive and my burned (from my g4 internal burner pioneer 103) dvd's read just fine on my g4 and my pc, just not on my g5. I'm not sure who makes the external burner casing. It says "safe store" on the external casing. I installed the dvd burner (pioneer 112) into the casing myself.
I managed to get around this by putting all my music on my ipod then grabbing it from there on my g5. thanks everyone |
