rip internet stream

anyone know of a good software to rip streaming audio?

It depends on the type of stream it is and file type but try CocoaJT (in the Recorder menu) or ASFRecorderX which both download the actual stream. If those don't work you can record/capture the audio as you hear it with programs like Wiretap and Audio Hijack.

VLC can "dump" the stream to a file which you then have to convert, but I've had little success with this method.

VLC is actually good, although a little complicated. Just use the Streaming/Export wizard.
