Maximum number of peer-to-peer connections
Windows XP Pro imposes a limit of 10 simultaneous connections in a peer-to-peer sharing setup (5 for XP Home).
What, if any, is the limit on the number of simultaneous connections in OSX (Tiger, non-Server version)? Can aynone tell me? |

And that limit is for AFP connections only. SMB, sftp, and web access are not limited to 10.

Meaning an unlimited amount.

Yup. Well, limited by one's tolerance for the beachball if there are too many concurrent clients actually doing something. YMMV.

So, if I understand you correctly, if I moved all my shared files from a Win XP Pro system and placed them on an OSX system (not OSX Server), then all the other Windows clients would no longer be limited by this maximum of 10. Correct? My situation is I have 15 PCs all hitting one PC in a peer-to-peer network, and, of course, the limit of 10 is becoming a nuisance. If I install a Mac OSX system as a simple file store, then it seems I solve the problem. Yes? Anyone got any objections to that conclusion? Thanks Jon |

No it won't. OS X has a limit of 10 users also. Unless you are going to use SMB, sftp or web access.

But a single Mac OSX system in an otherwise all-windows environment would have to be using SMB to make the files available to the PCs. So wouldn't that do the job? Or am I missing something here? |

yes it would work.
you may need to do some tweaks in the smb.conf file.
and maybe read this hint about authentication if you are in a mixed environment. You will run into some machines not wanting to authenticate ! There are load of hints out there....also get sharepoints it will save loads of hassel. should work fine.. Last edited by agentx; 02-02-2007 at 04:17 AM. |

Jon....
I have a number of Windows PC's that access one of my Hard Drives using 'Sharepoints' and it works flawlessly. All the PC's will connect over smb, and it will be fine. You could even buy a MacMini (fill it up with RAM) and run it headless on your desk and just VNC into it from your PC! |

Thanks for all your helpful replies, guys. I think that tells me what I need to know.
I do already use "Sharepoints" and I agree that it is an excellent utility. As for Photek's idea about using a Mac Mini - the same idea had crossed my mind too thanks again. Jon MacBook Pro - 10.4.8; iMac G5 - 10.4.8; Mac Mini (Intel) - 10.4.8 and a host of customers all using Windows! |
