[Q] Server on Powerbook?
Hi all,
Does anyone use either OS X or OS X Server for 24/7 server on PowerBook or iBook? I just wonder what is disadvantage using server on laptop instead of desktop system? Will 24/7 laptop server damage the motherboard? I'm really curious if there is anyone who host person server on his/her laptop. Thanks |

i don't run it as a server but i run my PBk all the time, though 24/7. I do have apache and mysql running but for local acess only. I develop everything in it.
When it gets really hot i hear the fan running, once it cools off a bit the fan stops. I also have Photoshop, Dreamweaver, iTunes, IE and X11 (with its hare of utils) running as well. This is its current uptime 5:14PM up 19 days, 2 mins, 3 users, load averages: 0.21, 0.03, 0.01

G3 500, FireWire. I have several Desktops though but nothing like a mobile. I may be getting a PBK G4 pretty soon... I hope

hey, ynolo
I also used to have Pismo 400 but got stolen and now I got iBook 600... I'm just thinking about make some sort of webserver over iBook or Powerbook later. Isn't it really nice to host very simple private server over laptop in term of space and especially laptop comes with very nice back-up battery in case of power outage. I want to hear more cases from many of people out there who use their portable 24/7 machine. Thanks

I'm running my tiBook 24/7 – During the day I have 10.2 Server running on it (as a test server), and at night it switches over to 10.2 client. Because 10.2 can't automaticallly wake from sleep, it stays awake all night, and starts iTunes playing at around 5.30 – makes a great alarm clock, and it's the quietest computer around. |

ditto
I have a PB G3 Firewire (400 MHz) I use it almost 24/7, or did until I got my new desktop. It still runs 24/7 but I use it much more sparadically. I have sent it in to get work done twice, both times related to the DVD drive though and not becuase of the amount that I use the computer. PowerBooks are great workhorses and last a long time!!!

Currently using my Powerbook 400 hooked to a Powerbook 667 and iMac at work, 24/7 (past 5 days). Not server stuff per se. Testing my "distributed" computing program right now, very intensive and I hope they can handle it.
One of the cool things I found a few days ago, I had a small lamp on my desk, 70's design, very 2001ish. I switched it on and boom! The bulb exploded and glass went everywhere, in fact the lights went out everywhere. The only thing illuminating the place was the Powerbook, happily crunching numbers on a database I'd been working on for a while. I would have been mighty pee'd off if that had failed. I'd lost my internet connection, just wish my ADSL modem had a battery backup built in too.
