Exclamation Mark as Junk Mail now takes 1 minute per message

Until several days ago, "Mark as Junk Mail" used to take about a second. Now it's taking 1 minute per message.

I've tried everything I can think of to restore the former Junk performance: Reset Junk filtering, remove 3000 messages from my Inbox (leaving 1400), Rebuild Inbox & Junk mail folders, delete Mail cache, Repair Permissions, and run DiskWarrior.

The only positive effect is that general Inbox performance was improved by eliminating 3000 messages, but that didn't affect the glacial Junk behavior.

Help!

I wonder if the file Mail uses for its rules regarding junk mail has gone crazy. Those are the "LSMMap" files in ~/Library/Mail. Try quitting Mail, moving those files to your Desktop, and testing again.

BTW, if that fixes it, it means you have to retrain the junk mail filter.

Lightbulb Is Mail timing out after a failure?

Thanks, giskard22, for the speedy suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't improve Mark as Junk Mail performance.

After posting my earlier note, I took a closer look at the the Mark as Junk delay. It's almost exactly a minute per message, as if Mail is attempting some action and timing out after 60 seconds. Hmmm.

Smile Mark as Junk Mail is back!

I'm pleased to report that speedy Mark as Junk Mail is back. Since I took two steps, I can say for sure which one (or both) was the cure:

1. Used Onyx to delete all caches: Cleaning > Caches > Application, Font, System & Kernel Caches. (Onyx is multi-purpose donationware utility from Titanium Software.)

Onyx strong recommends an immediate Restart after cleaning all caches.

2. Since I was restarting, I used this opportunity to startup from my DiskWarrior 4 CD and rebuild disk directories. DiskWarrior fixed errors in the volume index on my boot volume (home of all Mail files).

Although volume index corruption often results in abnormally slow file open and save, I doubt DiskWarrior was the complete cure because I tried it several days ago, and it didn't affect glacial Mark as Junk Mail performance.

Note: Deleting all the caches wiped out OS X memory of having launched applications, resulting in "launching for the first time" warnings. And it's broken the document-to-application relationship for some documents (which can be corrected in Get Info > Open with).

[I'm cross-posting this note in the macosxhints, MacFixIt and Apple Discussions forums.]

Just FYI, that means Onyx deleted something I wouldn't really call a cache. The LaunchServices database is what maintains the mappings between file types and applications, and remembers which applications you've opened before. Nothing that's supposedly a non-destructive maintenance routine should be deleting it.
