Classic Drag'n'Drop

Morning all

Any help here would be appreciated, I am presuming it is a permissions issue, but would like some guidance before I start fiddling.

I have OSX 10.1.2 on one partition and OS9.2 on another.

I boot using OSX and use Microsoft Outlook in Classic. (nb this is Outlook not Outlook Express)

When I receive an email with an attachment I am unable to drag the attachment to the desktop. I receive a message undefined the drag and drop operation could not be completed. An error occurred while writing to the disk, The disk might be full or write protected

The disk isn't full, and the privileges are set to
OSX volume OWNER - System, GROUP - wheel
OS9 Volume OWNER - System, GROUP - unknown

Providing it is a permissions problems, which folder do I need to change privileges for, and to what, in order for me to drag and drop the attachment to my OSX desktop.

Any ideas?

Not sure if this is valid or not, but I don't think I've ever tweaked my permissions on my volumes, and I see:

OS X volume: Owner - System, Group - Admin, privileges RW (owner); RW (group); R (others).

OS 9 volume: Owner - griffman, Group - unknown, privileges RW for owner, group, and others.

Use this information at your own risk ;-).

as an experiment, i launched classic, then ms word 2001, made some text, selected it and dragged it to the desktop. a 'picture clipping' appeared on the desktop, with the styled text in it.

the physical 'picture clipping' file is really in my /Users/username/Desktop directory.

what are the permissions on your desktop directory?

that this worked for me, my perms are:

% ll -d Desktop
drwxr-xr-x 5 merv staff 126 Feb 5 07:54 Desktop/

Cheers for the replies

The current permissions are as follows

Mac OS X Volume
drwxrwx--- 9 nikgreen staff 262 Feb 6 11:42 Desktop

Mac OS 9 Volume
drwxrwxrwx 13 nikgreen unknown 398 Feb 5 12:07 Desktop Folder

I've just changed the OS X volume to,

drwxrwxrwx 9 nikgreen staff 262
Feb 6 11:42 Desktop

and still receive the same error message.

Intrestingly though, I've just tried your approach of selecting text and dragging this to the desktop, and it does work, even in Outlook.

Just to clarify, this particular problem, when you receive an attachment in Outlook 2001:Mac, the actual file appears in the message body. If you CTRL-CLICK on the the icon, or double click you can chooes Save to Disk, which by default saves to the OS9 Desktop.

What would be much quicker, and the crux of the issue, is not being able to drag directly to the desktop, as you can if you booted up in OS9.

It's not really a show stopper, I know, but one of those minor irritations, you would love to get cleared up.

Anyhow, thanks in advance for your time, and I look forward to further input.

Some Classic applications exhibit the problem you've described (save to the Classic desktop instead of the user desktop). To make this less inconvenient you can keep a symlink to the Desktop Folder from your Classic boot volume in your ~/Library/Favorites folder. Then drag the symlink to your dock. Control click and save to the desktop as needed - the items you save will be in the dock folder. Pop it open and drag to the desktop.

Alternatively you can change the Outlook default save folder to anything but the desktop. (That's the only one it has problems with.) Then leave an alias or symlink to the new folder in a convenient place.

Hugh

PS - By the way - as a better answer to your real question, what happens if you drag to a folder on the desktop? I ask because I believe the Classic/X desktop confusion may be causing the problem.

In answer, you can drag to the root of the OS9 volume.

You cannot drag to root of the OSX volume.

Likewise you cannot drag to any of the desktop aliases. On my OSX desktop I have an alias to Documents and also Downloads, both of which are in my users folder.

I also have an alias of the OS9 Desktop Folder on my OSX desktop, and am unable to drag'n'drop into this.

(all these desktops get confusing after a while!!!)

Hope this helps.

Cheers
