iPod not recognized by iTunes

Hey everyone,

I have my entire music collection on my 30 GB video iPod. Yesterday afternoon I used a program called iPodRip to try and take all of my music off of the iPod and back it up on an external hard drive. However, in the middle of the process, iTunes froze up and I did a force quit (I have a mac, not a windows). When I reopened iTunes, it would not recognize my iPod and gave me an error message saying "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings."

However, I am aware that restoring the iPod erases all of the contents on the iPod. This is the last thing I want to do because my iPod is the single source of my entire library.

Is there anything else I can do to solve the problem?
Thank you in advance for any help.

iPod

I had this problem with my 20GB ipod photo but on windows xp using another program and the only way i was able to use my ipod again was by doing a restore. I took it into my local computer store and they were not able to help either.

This is why apple tell you to backup music rather than relying on your ipod.

I found that the best way to get music from an ipod was to go into windows explorer and copy the music folders into the iTunes folder and then set iTunes to sort the folder.

I just copy the folders from Terminal on my Mac.
