Forced shutdown

Hello again.
I have another problem, it's a random fault occuring never...then maybe 4 times in a row.

Basically the computer screen dims and a message is displayed saying I must restart the computer by holding the power button for several seconds, I cannot avoid doing so the computer is locked.
I restart it and it loads to the apple logo then the message returns, or it is diplayed as soon as OS X has loaded, or not at all!!
Also it just happened 30 minutes ago so I tried to restart, I heard the dvd drive noise but nothing else. Held the power button down and i felt a click at the left side, as if it had turned off, so tried turning on again, same problem, then again, I heard the fan kick in for 2 seconds...then nothing. So I unplugged the power cable and left it for a minute, and it's all okay.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?
Thanks alot and happy holidays.

Matt

You are experiencing a kernel fault. You will need to go to the console applications under Utilities and open up console.log and system.log. Look for the relevant time the crash occurred and see if you notice an application that maybe causing the crash.

Fill free to send the log in as an attachment for others to review.

I've posted it below if that is any good, if not I'll have to find my ftp details...somewhere..heh
Thanks for your help

25 21:39:09 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -127

It looks like the Apple PMU is causing the shutdown. It controls hardware. You should try disconnecting all the hardware such as external drives, printer, etc...

Restart and see if the kernel panic reoccurs. It wouldn't hard to run a hardware check with the dvds that came with your system.

Oki, reset the PMU cheers, I will see if this fault occurs again, thanks for your help guys.
As for the CD's, I have a seperate issue with those, the computer won't boot them from startup, it either bypasses them and goes to harddrive or stalls when loading them after the apple logo... life goes on huh
cheers

Okay it's just happened again, the only program I had running was safari, I've done all of the above as well as updating the software, is this a hardware problem, I am unable to run hardware check from my cd as it says it does not support this book?

Please use the tools located on the forum where it states to manage attachments when you reply. It is hard to follow in the post because of horizontal scrolling. If the document is >100kbytes, then break up the documents into two or more files or you can try to zip it. If you have to post a second time to get your logs attachment posted properly, it's ok.

First hand, I am not seeing anything. To help you resolve the issue you will need log at the relevant time of the panic. There are also three logs to look for. They are the console.log, system.log and panic.log. Open up console.app and system.log and console.log are clearly visible. Panic.log is located in /Library/Logs.

It is actually a good idea to keep the console application open while you are troubleshooting because you might see something that is relevant and can post from that information back to the forum.

Okay thanks.
Here's a fresh panic from this morning. When just browsing the web.

I have no idea what I'm looking for here, am I right in choosing the text with a hang-up in?
Cheers

Yes, looks good. Do you know what you were doing on the computer when it crashed? Was it just starting up, were you doing something in particular such as launching an application? Any external hardware connected to the machine? Any information as to how you were using the machine during the time of the crash is helpful.

Will you be able to attach the console log with the relevant time similar to these logs?

Do you see any similarities? Was any external hardware attached?

During the time of this crash, was there any external hardware attached to the machine.

Do you see any similarities between this crash and the more recent crash?

I have nothing attached.
It happens during the most basic operations, like browsing the web.
I don't know if its related to the cursor freezing. Sometimes the cursor freezes and I can't move the cursor at all, but the computer is still operational, this sometimes happens after coming out of power saver mode or whatever, when the screen goes a little dim. Also happens sometimes when trying to click a link or open an application.
It's got me stumped.

Cheers

I can attach that too sure but to me it just looks like that log starts from time of boot, there is not much information in it.

You are still attached to something. You have a wireless attachment.

Your computer is still attached to something since you are browsing the web. You have a wireless attachment to either a router or modem. Try shutting off the Airport and all other wireless attachments, restart, and see if you get another kernel panic. If you observe another fatal error, please post the relevant times of the panic.log, console.log system.log back on the post

Remember, nothing attached, this includes wireless attachments!

Ah

Okay I'll try that, but just now when reading your post it happened.
So I restart, it boots to apple logo [grey screen] then it happens again!?
So I restart, computer doesn't boot [black screen], hold power down, boot again, nothing, again and again. Then I hear the fan run for a second, then nothing, start again, then it boots into single user mode and says:

"Illegal instruction at SRRO FF85E778 SRRI 0008100"

I reset nv ram and reset all, then restart, it doesn't boot again, restart and eventually it boots.
Surely Airport doesn't even activate until total boot, ie not at the logo screen.

Now I bet it won't happen for hours and hours.
I'll turn airpot off and run some film or something on it, see what happens.\
Cheers

1) You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html

In particular, be sure to do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there.
See this Apple doc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

2) Please attach plain text (.txt) files, not MS Word files (.doc). Many people don't have MS Word and many of those that do have it are reluctant to open .doc files from strangers.

3) In a quick read through this thread, I didn't see where you posted the model of Mac that you have, or the version of OS X that you are running.

It does appear to be a Airport problem:
Quote:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2(405.1)@0x67e000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)@0x5ab000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.7)@0x45f000

Is this a used iBook? I ask this because your Hardware Test disk did not work.

So when you turned the Airport off, you didn't get a fatal crash, is this correct?
