Was it suicide perhaps? I think it was suicide. And why did the Mac cross the road...hmm... I like the answer already posted, but just to make some more rampant guesses: I think the Mac crossed the road to beat the heck out of Hawk (and if you don't get it, which I suspect most you don't, try reading AppleGeeks, a sometimes funny online comic, where they have a robot running OSX...

Yea I think it's suicide.
Why did the Mac cross the road? To convince the chicken to Switch? |

Here is a riddle I heard today. Maybe you've heard it but here goes...
3 men check into a hotel. They pay $30 for a room, $10 each. The manager realizes that the room should only cost $25. He sends the bellhop with 5 one dollar bills to give to the men. On his way to the room, the bellhop realizes that $5 can't be split between 3 people. He puts $2 in his pocket and gives the men $1 each. This means the men paid a total of $9 each. $9 x 3 men = $27 $27 plus the $2 in the bellhop's pocket = $29 Where is the other dollar? |

That's a good one. The catch is in the tricky working. They did indeed pay $27. $25 of that is in the manager's cash register, and $2 is in the bellhop's pocket.

No, the answer is that it crossed the road to get to the other side...
$9 x 3 = $27 is the amount the men have paid altogether. $25 + $2 = $27 is the amount the hotel staff have received between them. The amounts are the same, so there's no inconsistency :P The trick is in the last line, "$27 plus the $2 in the bellhop's pocket = $29" because the $2 should be subtracted, not added! |

Okay, was it an accident of some sort, or was it done on purpose?

Don't look at it as dollar bills, look at it as pennies. If the room really only cost 2,500 pennies rather than 3,000, then each man should have paid 833 pennies rather than 1,000 pennies. That leaves a difference of 167 pennies for each man owed.
The bellboy was given 500 pennies to give the three men, so he would have given 166 pennies each. Instead, the bellboy pocketed 200 pennies and gave 100 pennies to each of the men, shorting them 66 owed. The missing dollar is found in the 3 remainders from all the "rounding to the dollar". In this case, the 66 pennies rounded to 100 makes a difference of 34 pennies times the three men = 102, rounded out to the missing $1

Im not following all the rounding and I don't think this is the same as the actual answer. Chabig and Grape have it but try explaining to so that everything adds back up to $30. I think it makes more sense that way. The room was $25. $3 went back to the men. $2 in the bellhops pocket. $25 + $3 + $2 = $30 There are no inconsistencies. Its all about how the riddle is worded. Im impressed how quickly it was solved. good job. It took me much longer. Last edited by Screengem0531; 02-15-2007 at 02:38 PM. |

The question within the riddle was "Where is the other dollar?". Yes, if you add it backward, you will get $30, but that was not the question. The answer is within the remainder. If the room was actually $25, then each person would have had to correctly pay $8.33 instead of $10. When you are dealing with a decimal place, your math will be off when you "round to the nearest dollar". Especially when you multiply the rounded sum.

He came up the elevator to the ground floor from the parking garage where he had inhaled too much carbon monoxide. He walked down the steps leading to the front door and died of inhalation.
